Linux On The Microsoft Surface Won't Be Easy

If you were hoping you would be able to run your favorite Linux distribution on Microsoft's new Surface Tablet, it doesn't look like it will be an easy task to accomplish.

After going through the state of Linux distributions handling SecureBoot, UEFI-guru Matthew Garrett confirmed via his blog that Linux on the Microsoft Surface is likely a lemon.

The challenge with loading Linux (or any non-Microsoft operating system) on the new ARM-based tablet is that while it implements UEFI SecureBoot, it doesn't have the "Microsoft Windows UEFI Driver Publisher" key. This is the key used to sign Windows drivers and other non-Microsoft software (e.g. the signed Linux UEFI boot-loaders). Microsoft meanwhile has its own private key and this is the only UEFI SecureBoot key present on the Surface. Without the Surface having the "Microsoft Windows UEFI Driver Publisher" standard key, it's simply not a matter of having OS boot-loader be signed already to have support for this tablet. Microsoft only wants its OS on their tablet.

The Microsoft Surface tablet is based upon NVIDIA's Tegra 3 (T30) SoC with quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 1.3GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, storage capacities of 32GB or 64GB, and runs the Windows RT operating system. Being based upon the common NVIDIA Tegra 3 SoC, the hardware itself isn't too attractive or unique. You can already find plenty of other Tegra 3 tablets on the market capable of running Android/Linux like the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime, Google Nexus 7, Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 11, and NVIDIA's Cardhu reference tablet.

As Matthew mentions in his post, loading Linux or any other operating system to this first-generation ARM-based Microsoft Surface tablet would likely involve finding a vulnerability within the device's firmware in order to execute arbitrary code.

No end to Syria war if sides refuse to talk: envoy

AZAZ, Syria/CAIRO (Reuters) - The international peace negotiator for Syria pleaded with outside countries on Sunday to push the warring parties to the table for talks, warning that the country would become a failed state ruled by warlords unless diplomacy is given a chance.

Lakhdar Brahimi, who inherited the seemingly impossible task of bringing an end to the war after his predecessor Kofi Annan resigned in frustration in July, has launched an intensified diplomatic campaign to win backing for a peace plan.

He spent five days this week in Damascus, where he met President Bashar al-Assad. On Saturday he visited Assad's main international backers in Moscow, and on Sunday he travelled to Cairo, where President Mohamed Mursi has emerged as one of Assad's most vocal Arab opponents.

"The problem is that both sides aren't speaking to one another," he said. "This is where help is needed from outside."

Brahimi's peace plan - inherited from Annan and agreed to in principle in Geneva in June by countries that both oppose and support Assad - has the seemingly fatal flaw of making no mention of whether Assad would leave power.

The Syrian leader's opponents - who have seized much of the north and east of the country in the past six months - say they will not cease fire or join any talks unless Assad goes and have largely dismissed Brahimi's initiative.

But Brahimi says the plan is the only one on the table, and predicts "hell" if countries do not push both sides to talk.

"The situation in Syria is bad, very, very bad, and it is getting worse, and the pace of deterioration is increasing," Brahimi told reporters.

"People are talking about Syria being split into a number of small states ... This is not what will happen. What will happen is Somalization: warlords." Somalia has been without effective central government since civil war broke out there in 1991.

More than 45,000 people have been killed in Syria's 21-month war, the longest and deadliest of the revolts that began sweeping the Arab world two years ago.

The rebels are mainly from the Sunni Muslim majority, fighting against Assad, a member of the Shi'ite-derived Alawite minority sect, giving the war a dangerous sectarian dimension.

The rebels increasingly believe that their military successes of the past half year are bringing victory within reach. But Assad's forces still hold the densely-populated southwest of the country, the main north-south highway and the Mediterranean coast in the northwest.

The government also holds airbases scattered throughout the country, and has an arsenal including jets, helicopters, missiles and artillery that the fighters cannot match.

ASSAD FORCES SEIZE HOMS DISTRICT

Government troops scored a victory on Saturday after several days of fighting, seizing a Sunni district in Homs, a central town that controls the vital road linking Damascus to the coast.

Opposition activists said on Sunday that many people had been killed in the Deir Baalbeh district after it was captured, although it was not immediately possible to verify claims that a "massacre" had taken place. The opposition Syrian Network for Human Rights said it documented the summary execution of 17 men.

"They were young and old, mostly refugees who had fled to Deir Baalbeh from central parts of Homs," it said in a statement. Footage taken by activists showed the bodies of eight men with what appeared to be bullet wounds in the face and head.

With severe restrictions by Syrian authorities on independent media in place since the revolt broke out in March last year, the footage could not be confirmed.

Najati Tayyara, a veteran opposition campaigner from Homs in contact with the city, told Reuters residents believed the death toll was as high as 260, although the area was sealed off by government forces and allied militia.

"I am afraid that we have seen a massacre in Deir Baalbeh and a military setback for the rebels because of their lack of organization. They have been in need of ammunition for a long time and it finally ran out," he said.

"Communications are difficult and we are trying to piece together what happened in Deir Baalbeh. We so far know that regime forces went in after the rebels retreated and summarily executed dozens of people, including civilians."

Tayyara said the fall of Deir Baalbeh undermined supply lines to rebel held areas inside the city.

Bilal al-Homsi, an opposition activist in Old Homs, said MiG warplanes bombarded the area overnight and medium range rockets and hit the area of al-Khalidiya, a rebel-held Sunni district.

In the north, opposition activists said fighters had surrounded an air defense base near Aleppo airport, south of the contested city. Fighting raged in the area and warplanes bombed rebel positions near the base to try and break the siege.

In the northern city of Azaz, where activists said 11 people were killed when air strikes destroyed six homes, gravediggers were already digging graves for whichever victims will be next.

"We know the plane is coming to hit us, so we're being prepared," said Abu Sulaiman, one of a few men digging at the Sheikh Saad cemetery.

"Massacres are happening. We're putting every two or three bodies together. We've been working and digging since 6 in the morning. We're going to dig 10 new graves today," he said.

"We're preparing them. Maybe we'll be buried in them."

Fida, a 15-year-old girl in a green scarf and purple coat looked on as her father shoveled dirt from the gravesite. The dead from the previous day's attacks included friends she recognized when their shrouds were pulled back.

"Yesterday was the first time I uncovered blankets to discover that my friends had died," she said, as young children near the cemetery played hopscotch on the streets and kicked stones about.

"I was just about to go visit them about a half hour before the strike hit," she said. "In the end I visited them when they were dead."

India files murder charges in gang rape

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • NEW: The suspects already faced rape charges
  • NEW: A medical team in Singapore is conducting an autopsy
  • Gang rape of a 23-year-old in New Delhi galvanizes the nation
  • Police brace for more protests after her death

New Delhi (CNN) -- Indian authorities added murder charges Saturday for suspects in the brutal gang rape that led to the death of a 23-year-old woman and sent outraged protesters to the streets.

The suspects already faced rape charges.

Six people, including a minor and a bus driver, have been arrested in connection with the rape, which occurred in New Delhi this month.

Throngs of protesters have taken to the streets for days, demanding more protection for women and punishment for those behind the assault.

Fearing massive protests following the death, police tightened security in the capital city of New Delhi and barricaded some sites of previous rallies.

HIDE CAPTION

Authorities said demonstrations are only allowed at Jantar Mantar observatory and the Ram Lila grounds, which were the scenes of previous rallies.

Police banned protests in Raisina Hills and closed roads leading to the area, fearing a possible repeat of the furious, large-scale demonstrations that occurred last weekend. Ten metro stations also were ordered closed, authorities said.

The woman was airlifted to Singapore this week after she was treated for injuries in a New Delhi hospital.

Singapore doctors said she died "peacefully" early Saturday surrounded by her family and Indian Embassy officials. A medical team in Singapore is conducting an autopsy.

The woman had been in "extremely critical condition" since her arrival at the Singapore hospital Thursday, and took a turn for the worse, said Dr. Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.

"She had suffered from severe organ failure following serious injuries to her body and brain," Loh said. "She was courageous in fighting for her life for so long against the odds, but the trauma to her body was too severe for her to overcome."

Authorities have not released the name of the woman, but Indian protesters are calling her Damini, which means "lightning" in Hindi.

"Damini" is also a 1993 Bollywood film whose lead female character fights for a housemaid, a victim of sexual assault.

India's ambassador to Singapore said her relatives, who are Hindus and live in New Delhi, have asked for privacy.

Attackers assaulted the woman and her male companion on a bus on December 16, robbing them of their belongings before dumping them at the side of a road, police said.

The male companion was eventually discharged from a hospital.

Last week, police said the woman recovered enough to give a statement to a magistrate from her hospital bed. But on Sunday, she underwent another surgery to wash out infection in her abdomen, her doctors said.

The death spurred an outpouring of sadness and calls for action to ensure change and punishment of her rapists.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh offered his "deepest condolences."

"We have already seen the emotions and energies this incident has generated," he said, referring to widespread protests calling for justice and reforms since the attack. "It would be a true homage to her memory if we are able to channel ... these emotions and energies into a constructive course of action."

Reported rape cases in India -- where a cultural stigma keeps many victims from reporting the crime -- have increased drastically over the past four decades -- from 2,487 in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011, according to official figures.

New Delhi alone had 572 rapes reported last year and more than 600 in 2012.

One such recent case involved a girl, 17, who said she was gang-raped during the Hindu festival of Diwali on November 13. A formal case wasn't registered by police until 14 days later.

The girl committed suicide Wednesday by ingesting poison, according to authorities in the Patiala district of Punjab, in northern India.

In her suicide note, she blamed her alleged rapists. Three suspects -- including a female accomplice -- have been arrested.

Most women in India have stories of sexual harassment and abuse on public transportation, on the streets and elsewhere, said Seema Sirohi of the Indian Council on Global Relations.

"There are a lot of reasons why this happens, but the patriarchal system is one, a lack of policing is another and general treatment of women is not equal to men, even though it may be so under the law," Sirohi said.

The Indian government announced plans Thursday to "name and shame" convicted rapists by posting their names, images and addresses on official websites, according to the Times of India.

And the Cabinet plans to set up a commission to look into rape cases and suggest measures to improve women's safety. This group has three months to submit its report to the government.

CNN's Greg Botelho contributed to this report from Atlanta.

College bowl games continue to bring in money to Arizona

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- At Fiesta Bowl headquarters near the Scottsdale Fashion Square mall Friday afternoon, there is a line out the door to buy tickets.

Fans are looking to snag seats for Saturday?s Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe and Thursday?s Tostitos Fiesta Bowl at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale.

Fiesta Bowl Executive Director Robert Shelton says he expects about 40,000 people to attend the Buffalo Wild Wings match-up between TCU and Michigan state and 70,000 people to watch Oregon and Kansas State battle it out in Glendale.

?We expect to sell out the Fiesta Bowl,? Shelton said.

Tickets are still available for the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, but Shelton said only suite seats are left for the Fiesta Bowl.

?Surprisingly, you might get a better deal on those seats than buying from a scalper on the streets,? he said.

Of the 120,000 or so tickets sold so far for bowl week, about half are sold back to the teams. The rest go on the market to the public, at an average price of $220.00.

?That brings in about $14 million,? said Shelton.

Over the past five years, Shelton said bowl games have brought in more than a billion dollars to the Valley of the Sun and the state of Arizona.

?This year, I would estimate with two bowl games, we?re going to see about $250 million,? Shelton said.

Most of the money comes from out of state visitors spending money in hotels and restaurants.

The Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Tempe Friday was packed with more than 300 members of the Michigan State band and cheerleading team.

?We have staff from all of the stores in the region coming to help us out,? said Assistant General Manager Ric Stanfield.

Stanfield said he expects even more business tomorrow, before the bowl game.

?We?re going to turn this entire parking lot into an extended Buffalo Wild Wings. Beer tents, food tents, live bands,? Stanfield said.

When Stanfield was asked if this weekend would be hectic he responded, ?I think so, but it?s a good kind of hectic.?

ITC Judge recommends Samsung post 88 percent value bond, import bans in Apple patent case

If you're keeping track of the multiple, and let's face it, tiresome Samsung / Apple patent debacle, a document that just turned up at the ITC might spell more trouble for the Korean manufacturer. It's a publicly redacted version of Judge Pender's recommendations, and pertains to the October ruling that deemed Samsung borrowed four of Cupertino's designs. The most iconic being design patent D618,678 (that which you see above). The others include multi-touch patent 7,479,949 (which was tentatively invalidated) along with two other patents (RE41,922 and 7,912,501) relating to graphic display elements and audio hardware detection. If the recommendations are adopted -- and FOSS Patents suggests this is entirely possible -- Samsung could face a US import ban after a 60 day presidential review, an order prohibiting "significant" sales of infringing products in America along with a posting a bond for 88 percent of the entered value of mobile phones (plus 32.5 percent for media players and 37.6 percent for tablets) that include the breaching design features. Pender has, however, reportedly cleared several Samsung "designarounds" which, if implemented to satisfaction, would mean the tech giant could continue trading. For now though, the recommendations are awaiting the Commission's review.

Experts: Trained police needed for school security

The National Rifle Association wants armed volunteers in all US schools. But school safety experts and school board members say there's a huge difference between a trained law enforcement officer who becomes part of the school family ? and a guard with a gun.

People yelled at him amid the chaos but he didn't hear. He experienced "a tunnel vision of concentration."

While two?teachers?and three students were injured when the glass shattered in the 2001 attack on Granite Hills High School, Agundez confronted the assailant and wounded him before he could get inside the school and use his second weapon, a handgun.

The National Rifle Association's response to a Connecticut school massacre envisions, in part, having trained, armed volunteers in every school in America. But Agundez, school safety experts and school board members say there's a huge difference between a trained law enforcement officer who becomes part of the school family ? and a guard with a gun.

The NRA's proposal has sparked a debate across the country as gun control rises once again as a national issue. President Barack Obama promised to present a plan in January to confront gun violence in the aftermath of the killing of 20 Sandy Hook Elementary School students and six?teachers?in Newtown, Conn.

Agundez said what happened before the shooting in the San Diego County school should frame the debate over the NRA's proposal.

With a shooting at another county school just weeks before, Agundez had trained the staff in how to lock down the school, assigned evacuation points, instructed?teachers?to lock doors, close curtains and turn off the lights. He even told them computers should be used where possible to communicate, to lessen the chaos.

And his training? A former SWAT team member, Agundez' preparation placed him in simulated stressful situations and taught him to evade a shooter's bullets. And the kids in the school knew to follow his advice because they knew him. He spoke in their classrooms and counseled them when they came to him with problems.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, school boards, administrators,?teachers?and parents are reviewing their security measures.

School security officers can range from the best-trained police officers to unarmed private guards. Some big-city districts with gang problems and crime formed their own police agencies years ago. Others, after the murder of 13 people at Columbine High School in 1999, started joint agreements with local police departments to have officers assigned to schools ? even though that was no guarantee of preventing violence. A trained police officer at Columbine confronted one of two shooters but couldn't prevent the death of 13 people.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

FOX, Dec. 16, 1:25 p.m. ET

Once upon a time there was a commercial for a phone I?ll never buy, advertising a technological frill I?d never use, implying a spice-up-the-relationship trick that I would not recommend, that was nonetheless the sexiest thing I?d seen on TV in quite some time. I?m speaking, of course, of the ad in which a wife sends her husband off on a business trip with a racy video, beamed directly into his Samsung phone via X-ray technology or whatever, with the sly admonition, ?Probably shouldn?t watch it on the plane.?*

Needless to say, this ad is silly. If there is anything we have learned from the travails of Hulk Hogan, it is that if a video of anyone doing anything sort of sexual exists on a Wi-Fi-enabled device, that video will somehow make its way to the Internet in the way that an air bubble trapped underwater will, eventually, make its way to the surface. This husband and loving father, who seems so cute and beardy and clueless, will, in the rush to make his plane, leave his phone in the cab. Nefarious elements will find the phone. Within days, his mother-in-law will be asked at book club: ?Was that your darling daughter I saw on YouPorn? ?

But it doesn?t matter. For in that moment, as the wife gives that little waggle of her eyebrows, the husband all at once realizes what she?s saying, and she gives a chipper wave and a ?Say bye to Daddy!?; they are the very picture of modern, technologically enhanced marital bliss. They are sexy and adorable. I would do anything to be like them (but I wouldn?t do that) (if by do that you mean buy a Samsung phone).

And then anyway, in the first quarter of Dec. 16?s early NFL games, Samsung ruined it by unveiling the ad?s follow-up?a shot-for-shot remake, like Gus Van Sant?s Psycho, with Santa and Mrs. Claus in place of the couple, and two elves in place of the kids. I love this ad even more than the previous one?not just because of general senior sex-positivity, but because it is so clearly the act of a company and an agency taking it juuuuuuust one step too far. It was such an obviously bad idea, but they did it anyway. The best thing about television in 2012 was that there were hundreds of channels, and they all had 525,600 minutes of airtime to fill this year, which means that just as there were times that everything went right, there were also plenty of chances for everything to go wrong.

Correction, Dec. 28 2012: This article initially punctuated the sexy wife's punchline with an exclamation point. She doesn't exclaim; she admonishes slyly. (Return.)

Whale dies after getting stranded on NYC beach

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

NEW YORK -- An emaciated 60-foot finback whale that washed up on a coastal community devastated by Superstorm Sandy has died, marine officials said Thursday.

The whale was found beached Wednesday in Breezy Point, Queens, where 126 homes burned down and more than 2,000 were damaged during the Oct. 29 storm. It was carried out at high tide but washed ashore another time on Thursday, and marine officials said they found it dead, according to media reports.

?Biologists have confirmed that the whale has died,? Mendy Garron, a marine mammal rescue specialist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told Reuters. ?Plans are currently being developed for necropsy and disposal of the carcass."

PhotoBlog: Finback whale beached at Breezy Point

Finback whales are an endangered species. They are second in size only to the blue whale, and can reach up to 70 feet in length and weigh up to 70 tons. The whales migrate to equatorial waters in the fall and during winter, they mostly fast, surviving on their fat reserves. Winter is also when they mate, and calves are born one year later, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

It is one of the fastest large whales and can stay underwater for up to 50 minutes on one breath.

Tim Dufficy, 26, a member of the Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department, said the firehouse was contacted by security in the private cooperative about the animal. He and a few other volunteers took some new equipment, such as a portable pump and a special hose, that they'd gotten in the aftermath of the storm to keep water flowing on the whale during low tide since it was mostly out of the water.

"Everyone was hoping," he told NBC News. "But ... we knew the prospects were grim."

The whale did respond to the firefighters efforts, opening its eyes and moving its tails and side fins, he said. The fire crew eventually left the animal in the care of marine biologists. When Dufficy went to check back on the whale on Thursday, it had drifted seven blocks down the beach.

Rob DiGiovanni, executive director of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation told NBCNewYork.com?on Wednesday that the whale was ?severely emaciated? and that the outcome did not look good.

Calls placed Thursday seeking comment to the foundation and NOAA were not immediately returned.

The whale was found on the bay side of the community, which is tucked in by the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay. With most homes rendered uninhabitable by the storm, many residents have had to move away and make daily trips to continue repairs.

Sharks, dolphins and a large sea turtle have also turned up on the beaches of Breezy Point, which was founded more than a century ago by Irish immigrants. It's not clear how many survived, said Dufficy, though he knew the sea turtle was alive when marine officials took it away.

A whale also beached itself on the community's Atlantic coast around the summer of 1960, said Point Breeze Fire Chief Marty Ingram.

Scott Brown: Obama Sent Fiscal Cliff Proposal - Business Insider

A frantic day in fiscal cliff negotiations has produced contradicting reports over a possible new offer from the White House and the news that the House of Representatives will reconvene unexpectedly on Sunday, hours before the nation is set to go over the cliff.

President Barack Obama reached out and provided Senate Republicans with another offer to avert the so-called fiscal cliff, Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown wrote on his Facebook page. But CNBC and others quickly disputed that report, saying that Democrats and the White House were denying the report.

An aide to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid aide flatly denied Brown's statements, responding "yes" when asked if Brown's posts were false.

Meanwhile,?House Speaker John Boehner has called the House back in session on Sunday ? one day before the nation reaches the so-called fiscal cliff. The House will be in session at 6:30 p.m. ? 29.5 hours before the deadline.

Brown's initial Facebook post sparked speculation that Obama would send a bill to Senate Republicans as soon as today:

Facebook/ScottBrownforSenate

"I'm rushing to get on plane and thought I would keep you all informed," Brown wrote.

Meanwhile, CNN's Dana Bash reported?that Obama told Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would send him a "scaled-back" bill that would likely erase some, but not all, of the tax hikes scheduled to hit beginning Jan. 2. It would include extensions of Bush-era tax breaks for incomes of less than $250,000, the current estate tax rate, and unemployment insurance.

Shortly after Brown's Facebook post and CNN's report, CNBC's John Harwood contradicted both:

Twitter/@JohnJHarwood

Bash later amended her initial report, citing McConnell aides who told her that details of the plan ? not a concrete bill ? were expected to be sent to the Senate Minority Leader today.

Brown later tried to clarify his own statement in a Facebook post, saying it was based on an email sent from McConnell to GOP Senators earlier in the day:

Just an update. This AM I received an EM from leader McConnell letting the GOP members know that the President called him last night and would be giving him a proposal to avoid the cliff. I was excited and hopeful that upon our return to business tonight we would be able to review or discuss it.

The flurry came?just hours after Reid slammed House Republicans on the Senate floor, saying that?Boehner was running a "dictatorship" and preventing a deal from getting done. He warned that it "looked like" the U.S. would go over the fiscal cliff.

The White House said Thursday that Obama had spoken with McConnell and the other three Congressional leaders on Wednesday before leaving Hawaii and heading back to Washington, D.C.?McConnell's office said that it was the first call a Democrat had called him since Thanksgiving.

Social Media Trends from the Nielsen Social Media Report 2012

Last updated 1 hour 14 minutes ago

Nielsen?s State of the Media: The Social Media Report 2012 reflects on various social media trends of 2012, as well as the potential impact they will have on the coming year. There is no denying that social media is more popular than ever with consumers, and that having a social media presence is critical for SMBs? online marketing strategies in 2013.? Here are a few highlights from the report.

Mobile Usage Is Not Slowing Down

As you might have guessed, the amount of time consumers spent on PCs and Smartphones increased between July 2011 and July 2012.? Time spent on these devices grew by 21%, while time on apps rose 120% in that same period.? While PCs still remain our primary source of Internet access, the usage of mobile Web and apps are increasing at a significant rate. Small businesses can?t afford to ignore mobile any longer, and should invest in mobile-friendly advertising and sites to reach this growing audience.?

Time Spent on Social Networks Grew 37%.

From July 2011 to July 2012, the time consumers spent on social media sites grew from 88.4B minutes to a whopping 121.1B minutes. Nielsen attributes this substantial growth in part to the rise of mobile apps, which enable us to stay connected to our favorite sites while on the go. In fact, we spent seven times more minutes on apps than on the mobile Web. Time spent on these sites means social media access is not only on the rise, but also that we are more engaged when we do visit them. For small businesses, this means being active on social media is more important than ever in order to reach consumers spending a large portion of their time there.?

Consumers Value Social Customer Service

For more and more consumers, social care, also known as social customer service, is becoming an increasingly important, and valuable social media trend for SMBs to leverage. Nielsen reports that one in three social media users prefer social care to contacting a company by phone. That means that more consumers are using social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and the company blog to reach out to businesses and brands in the hope of resolving a customer service issue. SMBs are not immune to this trend, and many will see an influx of customer complaints through these channels, which can impact their online reputation. As a result, it?s vital for businesses to monitor their social media pages regularly and respond to customer questions, complaints, and more as soon as possible.?

As we?ve seen throughout the year, mobile and social media continue to top consumers? online behavior. And as 2012 winds down, it?s important for small businesses to think about whether they have successfully taken advantage of some of these social media trends, and how they can incorporate them in the future. You can read the entire Nielsen social media report here.?

How do mobile and social media fit into your online marketing strategy? Let us know in the comments!

Eating asparagus may prevent a hangover, study suggests

Dec. 26, 2012 ? Drinking to ring in the New Year may leave many suffering with the dreaded hangover. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Food Science, published by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), the amino acids and minerals found in asparagus extract may alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells against toxins.

Researchers at the Institute of Medical Science and Jeju National University in Korea analyzed the components of young asparagus shoots and leaves to compare their biochemical effects on human and rat liver cells. "The amino acid and mineral contents were found to be much higher in the leaves than the shoots," says lead researcher B.Y. Kim.

Chronic alcohol use causes oxidative stress on the liver as well as unpleasant physical effects associated with a hangover. "Cellular toxicities were significantly alleviated in response to treatment with the extracts of asparagus leaves and shoots," says Kim. "These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells."

Asparagus officinalis is a common vegetable that is widely consumed worldwide and has long been used as an herbal medicine due to its anticancer effects. It also has antifungal, anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties.

The mirror, not the scale, is the enemy of many this New Year's resolution time

Dec. 27, 2012 ? For years Blanca Ramirez, like many Americans, started each new year with a resolution to lose weight. But no more. "I lost 55 pounds this year and the weight is rolling off and will stay off," said the 42 year-old, married, mother of three. Ramirez underwent bariatric surgery at Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care in August and has lost 55 pounds in four months.

Losing weight and improving health are top New Year's resolutions expected to challenge Americans this year, experts say.

According to a study released in December, 2012, more than a quarter (27.8%) of Americans are obese. The United Health Foundation also reports that 30.8 % of American adults have high blood pressure.

"Losing weight has a positive effect on diabetes, heart disease, orthopaedic injuries, and even cancer," said Bipan Chand, MD, director, Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery & Bariatric Care, who performed Ramirez's gastric sleeve surgery. "Looking good is just one part of the weight- loss equation; adding years to your life is the real benefit."

Chand says there are many reasons that spur people to choose weight-loss surgery, from years of trying and failing to lose weight to experiencing a serious health scare. For Chicago-area resident Blanca Ramirez, it was her own reflection that spurred a decision to have a gastric-sleeve bariatric procedure. "I have been overweight since I was a teenager and I didn't like what I saw when I looked in the mirror," said Ramirez, who is 5 ft. 3 inches and weighed 225 pounds before her surgery in August. "People would tell me I was pretty and I didn't need to lose weight but I knew I was obese and was sick of being fat."

Diets, exercise programs, prescription pills, Ramirez says she tried everything from Atkins to Weight Watchers. The final straw was when poor health affected her family. "My brother had a heart attack at the age of 35. I already had cholesterol problems and I knew my weight would continue to cause more health problems," said the administrative secretary.

Ramirez attended a free weight loss information session offered by Loyola. "I liked what I heard about their program especially the nutritional counseling, exercise guidance and regular support groups," said Ramirez. "Loyola confirmed that my insurance would cover the procedure and that was the final green light to decide bariatric surgery was right for me."

Loyola offers medical as well as surgical weight-loss interventions, including laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy.

And Ramirez's resolution for 2013? "To help others win the battle of the bulge.People are always asking me my success and I tell them to attend a Loyola information session," she says. "I like looking at myself in the mirror now. I want others to lose weight and like what they see in the mirror, too."

The Platinum Girl Celebrity Blog | Relationship Love Gossip Rumors ...

Janet Jackson's engaged! This is so exciting! I didn't even know she was dating anyone since Jermaine "The Dummy" Dupri. I call him "The Dummy" because he supposedly cheated on Janet with a stripper back in 2010.
Moving on. Janet's fiance is Wissam Al Mana, 37,?a Qatari billionaire who bought her a ring so big she's keeping it locked up because she's afraid it'll be lost.

The wedding will happen in the spring and cost millions. Wissam's hiring a chef to create a custom menu and is flying all of her family to Qatar in private jets for the ceremony. As for babies, Janet, 46,?said if she can't have children that she intends to adopt.

I'm really happy for Janet. I know how bumpy the?love road?has been for her so I'm thrilled she's found someone who seems to want to give her the world and cares about her family. I also like this one because it's been a very private romance.

Janet's story proves women must have faith even after the worst relationships;?The next best thing can very well?be right around the corner.

Congrats to Janet and Wissam!

Until next time...

Storms, tornado threats for Christmas around US

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Freezing rain and sleet made for a sloppy Christmas morning trek in parts of the nation's midsection on Tuesday, while residents along the Gulf Coast braced for thunderstorms, high winds and tornadoes.

Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pileup in Oklahoma, where authorities warned would-be travelers to stay home. Fog blanketed highways, including arteries in the Atlanta area where motorists slowed as a precaution. In New Mexico, drivers across the eastern plains had to fight through snow, ice and low visibility.

At least two tornadoes were reported in Texas, though only one building was damaged, according to the National Weather Service. More than 150 flights nationwide were canceled by midday, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.com. More than half were canceled by American Airlines and its regional affiliate, American Eagle.

American is headquartered and has its biggest hub at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

Meanwhile, a blizzard watch was posted for parts of Indiana and western Kentucky for storms expected to unfold Tuesday amid predictions of up to 4 to 7 inches of snow in coming hours. Much of Oklahoma and Arkansas braced under a winter storm warning of an early mix of rain and sleet forecast to eventually turn to snow.

Some mountainous areas of Arkansas' Ozark Mountains could get up to 10 inches of snow, which would make travel "very hazardous or impossible" in the northern tier of the state from near whiteout conditions, the National Weather Service said.

Elsewhere, areas of east Texas and Louisiana braced for possible thunderstorms as forecasters eyed a developing storm front expected to spread across the Gulf Coast to the Florida Panhandle.

The holiday may conjure visions of snow and ice, but twisters this time of year are not unheard of. Ten storm systems in the last 50 years have spawned at least one Christmastime tornado with winds of 113 mph or more in the South, said Chris Vaccaro, a National Weather Service spokesman in Washington, via email.

The most lethal were the storms of Dec. 24-26, 1982, when 29 tornadoes in Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi killed three people and injured 32; and those of Dec. 24-25, 1964, when two people were killed and about 30 people injured by 14 tornadoes in seven states.

Quarter-sized hail reported early Tuesday in western Louisiana was expected to be just the start of a severe weather threat on the Gulf Coast, said meteorologist Mike Efferson at the weather service office in Slidell, La. Tornado watches were in effect across southeastern Texas and southern Louisiana.

Storms along the Gulf Coast could bring winds up to 70 mph, heavy rain, more large hail and dangerous lightning in Louisiana and Mississippi, Efferson said. Furthermore, warm, moist air colliding with a cold front could produce dangerous straight-line winds.

The storm was moving quickly and was expected to intensify as it headed into northeast Louisiana and Mississippi into the late afternoon and early evening, said Bill Adams at the weather service's Shreveport, La., office.

In Mississippi, Gov. Phil Bryant urged residents to have a plan for any severe weather.

"It only takes a few minutes, and it will help everyone have a safe Christmas," Bryant said.

In Alabama, the director of the Emergency Management Agency, Art Faulkner, said he has briefed both local officials and Gov. Robert Bentley on plans for dealing with a possible outbreak of storms.

No day is good for severe weather, but Faulkner said Christmas adds extra challenges because people are visiting unfamiliar areas and often thinking more of snow than possible twisters.

In California, after a brief reprieve across the northern half of the state on Monday, wet weather was expected to make another appearance on Christmas Day. Flooding and snarled holiday traffic were expected in Southern California.

How Christmas morning looks from space

NOAA / NASA

This visualization shows a hemisphere's worth of weather on Christmas morning as seen by the GOES East satellite. The weather data is overlaid on a "Blue Planet" image of the Americas.

By Alan Boyle

All calendars must end, whether we're talking about the Maya calendar's nearly 400-year baktun cycle?? or our 25-day Cosmic Log Space Advent Calendar. This final image for the 2012 calendar comes from the GOES East weather satellite, and shows how the weather is shaping up this Christmas morning in the Americas.

The GOES satellites, East and West, are in geostationary orbits 22,300 miles above Earth. That allows them to monitor a whole hemisphere's weather 24/7 from a fixed position above the the planet. (GOES stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.) NASA takes the GOES satellites' readings on cloud cover and overlays them on a full-disk "Blue Planet" view of the oceans and land masses. The result is a hemisphere-wide snapshot of Earth like this one, produced every three hours.

Although this picture marks the end of our Advent calendar, you can keep the satellite images coming throughout the next year with?GeoEye's free desktop calendar. The calendar consists of a series of computer desktop wallpaper images, highlighting GeoEye satellite views from the past 13 years. DigitalGlobe also offers?2013 calendar packages?with an Earth-from-space theme, for purchase through the company's online store.

Seeing our planet from space tends to broaden a person's perspective on Earth's problems and preciousness: That's what Apollo 17's astronauts discovered 40 years ago this month when they snapped the first and most famous "Blue Planet" picture. Here's hoping that the past month's pictures of Earth as seen from outer space have broadened your perspective as well. Have you seen 'em all? If not, graze through the links below.

91% Silver Linings Playbook

All Critics (169) | Top Critics (42) | Fresh (153) | Rotten (16)

An edgy romantic dramedy that suits our anxious times.

This meaningful film keeps the laughs, giddy anxiousness and warm butterflies from the trailer and sustains it all through two full hours of a love story.

Lawrence, in her most high-low, sad-comic turn yet, is remarkable.

It shouldn't work - there's just too much going on. But it does. Spectacularly. Go see it.

Just about everybody in the cast of David O. Russell's strange and disturbing and deeply romantic new film has the chance to act with a capital A.

There's nothing wrong with the overrated Jennifer Lawrence that some serious acting lessons couldn't improve. The rest of the actors are pretty much on their own.

A tenderhearted tale about two terribly wounded souls who survive by grudgingly leaning on each other's shoulder.

Your best bet for a movie that will entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even make you tear-up.

Russell handles the shifts in tone extremely effectively, and has sacrificed little of his sardonic edge in crafting something this superficially accessible.

Funny without being glib, serious without being pretentious or depressing, this is a mature movie with fully realized characters and fine performances.

Cooper gives a fine performance in a difficult role, but the one who really shines is Lawrence. Beautiful and sexy, she should be up for awards for this one.

Silver Linings Playbook is really touching, and more memorable than all the rom-coms of 2012 put together.

The movie itself is bipolar, full of mounting tension and hilarity like a classic screwball comedy, but it's all just barely skimming above a deep layer of darkness.

Pat's rhyming relationship with Pat Senior makes the son (played by Bradley Cooper) different from the many other movie manboys you've seen in the past couple of years.

delivers the kind of sharply timed laughs that Sturges and Wilder would've appreciated

There's a lot to like here and with strong performances all-around, a fresh script with characters that sound and act real. Add this film to your essential Oscar viewing game plan.

Loaded with pleasant surprises, this adaptation of Matthew Quick's novel combines romantic comedy, dysfunctional family woes and a sense of danger without ever losing its way.

One hundred percent predictable, yet strangely kind of fun.

It's honest you see; and honestly, as any fule no, is the bedrock of any successful relationship whether it be between two homo fictives or an audience and their movies.

...recalls the screwball psychiatry of Russell's earlier efforts, only this time the farce has heart.

'Screwball' is a slang term for 'crazy,' and perhaps this is what inspired writer-director David O. Russell to literalize as well as update the screwball comedy genre here...

When you make a movie set in Philly, you'd better get it right. Knowledgeable Eagles' fans may find Russell's sense of history maddening.

Writer-director David O. Russell's out-of-control filmmaking style is perfectly suited to a romantic-comedy involving mental illness, and he infuses the film with a sparky unpredictability that's echoed in the perfectly graded performances of the cast.

Smart, funny, great performances

Indeed the movie does make you feel quite good about humanity as the final credits roll.

...ultimately unable to wholeheartedly become the feel-good romantic comedy that Russell has clearly intended...

'Chaos': Gunman ambushes, kills two firefighters at New York blaze ...

(CNN) ? A man convicted of killing his grandmother decades ago ambushed firefighters on Monday, fatally shooting two of them as they arrived to battle a blaze in upstate New York, police said.

Two other firefighters were wounded in the attack in the Rochester-area town of Webster. A police officer from the nearby town of Greece suffered minor shrapnel wounds when his vehicle was hit by gunfire.

Investigators believe the suspect, William Spengler, 62, set the original fire, then likely set himself up on a berm with a clear view of the scene and started shooting.

?It appears that it was a trap,? Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. ?There was a car and a house that were involved in flames, probably set by Mr. Spengler, who laid in wait in armament and then shot the first responders.?

Authorities do not know how Spengler ? who was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound hours after the four firefighters were shot ? obtained the weapon or weapons he used or why he opened fire, Pickering told reporters. As a convicted felon, Spengler was not allowed to legally possess weapons, but he had ?several different types of weapons? Monday, the police chief said.

Spengler was convicted in 1981 of first-degree manslaughter in the death of his grandmother and had been released on supervised parole, Pickering said.

He is believed to have lived in the home where the original fire erupted with his sister, who has not yet been accounted for, Pickering said. Their mother died sometime in the past year, the chief added.

For several hours Monday, the threat of gunfire stopped firefighters from battling the blaze and forced police SWAT teams to evacuate 33 people in the neighborhood of small waterfront homes.

Eventually, seven houses were ?totally destroyed? by the fire. Although the fires were under control as of 2:30 p.m. ET, by then authorities still hadn?t been able to get in any of the homes. Pickering said it?s possible more victims could be inside.

?I?m hoping that everyone was able to escape from the inferno,? he said. ?Those houses were close together.?

With ?raging inferno? and gunfire, scene described as ?chaos?

Firefighters first arrived at the Webster fire before 6 a.m., said Rob Boutillier, the town?s fire marshal.

By then, Spengler had set up himself somewhere above the scene in a ?natural hollow, a position of cover to actually be a sniper,? Pickering explained.

The calls from firefighter came in soon after, reporting that four of them had been shot. Police officers rushed to the scene, and one of the first ones there exchanged fire, ?in all likelihood, (saving) many lives,? according to the police chief.

?When we get there, we have people down, we have raging fires, and we have gunshots going off,? Pickering said.

?It?s chaos. It?s chaos.?

Authorities worked quickly to set up a perimeter, trying to contain the situation and the shooter. Neighborhood residents were first told to ?shelter in place? because the gunman was at large, but some left their homes because of the fire.

Several people could be seen running. Police tracked some of them down, found they were neighbors seeking safety and escorted them out. Eventually, residents were whisked from the area in armored personnel carriers. All the while, there was ?this raging inferno, with black smoke everywhere,? Pickering said.

No more gunfire was exchanged after that initial burst, though police did see a man they believed to be Spengler moving at times. The police chief said he didn?t know if the police officer hit Spengler early on, but he said the medical examiner indicated that Spengler was killed after shooting himself in the head.

Two firefighters also died at the scene.

One of them, Lt. Michael Chiapperini, was a veteran of the West Webster Fire Department and also a police lieutenant. He?d been named Firefighter of the Year just two weeks ago, and not long before that, he had volunteered to go to Long Island to help those suffering after Superstorm Sandy, according to Lt. Gov. Bob Duffy.

The other slain firefighter was Tomasz Kaczowka, who was also a 911 dispatcher. He?d been with the West Webster Fire Department for just more than a year, fire department spokesman Al Sienkiewisz said.

One firefighter escaped from the scene in his own vehicle about an hour after he was shot and was taken to a hospital by an ambulance from another location, Boutillier said. Another wounded firefighter was conscious and speaking when he was removed from the scene, he said.

The wounded firefighters were in intensive care Monday at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, officials said.

The other person wounded was a Greece, New York, police officer who was on his way to work when his car was fired upon. He suffered shrapnel wounds that Pickering described as minor.

?We work with these people everyday; they?re like our brothers,? said Pickering of the slain firefighters, as he fought back tears. ?It?s terrible.?

New shooting spurs more talk on gun control

Authorities have not said what weapons were found with Spengler, though Pickering said ?probably at least a rifle was used? to shoot the first responders.

?I know that many people are going to be asking, ?Were they assault rifles?? ? I don?t know that. I can?t answer that at this time,? he told reporters.

The shooting occurred amid a renewed gun control debate after the December 14 elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 26 people, most of them children. The gunman in that case, Adam Lanza, also killed his mother and himself.

The head of a lobbying group that represents first responders said the Monday shooting was ?senseless and cruel.?

?The firefighters who responded today were performing a selfless, meaningful service to their community, unaware that a cold-hearted maniac was planning to ambush them and take their lives,? said Harold Schaitberger, general president of the Washington-based International Association of Fire Fighters. ?Coming on the heels of the horrific tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, and on Christmas Eve, this shooting is even harder to comprehend.?

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the Webster shooting as ?horrific.? And the state?s attorney general called it a ?senseless tragedy?

President Barack Obama has set a January deadline for ?concrete proposals? to deal with gun violence in the wake of the Newtown school shooting.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, has said she will introduce legislation to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, while National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre has said his group will fight any new gun restrictions, saying most gun laws now on the books are rarely enforced.

Pickering, the Webster police chief, said it was important ? in the wake of the shooting in his town and others ? to ?get a handle on gun control.? He also said more needs to be done to make sure that dangerous people aren?t in society, where they can kill.

?For the last 20 years we have been turning people loose and de-institutionalizing people, and I think we?ve swung too far,? he said. ?I think there are still people that need to be in institutions that are a danger to themselves or others. And this is a classic example.?
