HBT: Ortiz to DL with Achilles' tendon injury

Bobby Valentine revealed during a radio interview with WEEI that David Ortiz will be placed on the disabled list with the Achilles? tendon injury he suffered in Monday?s game.

Tests showed no tear or rupture, but with the 36-year-old designated hitter unlikely to play for at least a week even if it proved to be a minor injury there was no reason for the Red Sox to keep him on the active roster.

Mauro Gomez will be recalled to take Ortiz?s spot on the roster and suddenly the decision to unload Kevin Youkilis for little in return because the Red Sox had ?too much? first base/third base/designated hitter depth is looking awfully questionable.

Ortiz, who played at least 145 games in seven of the previous eight seasons, hit .316 with 23 homers and 25 doubles in 89 games before the injury for his first OPS above 1.000 since 2007.

10 Burdens Funeral Directors Carry : ConnectingDirectors.com ...

Article provided by: Caleb Wilde,?www.calebwilde.com

I shed the burden by climbing routes at the local indoor rock climbing gym.

Note: I wrote this article over the weekend and I wasn?t going to publish it until Wednesday, but since I just spent my entire night [11 PM to 5:45 AM] picking up three deceased persons, I thought it?s probably appropriate to post it now. ?After I hit ?publish?, I?ll be off to bed and back to work by noon. ?Ah, the joys of a small family business.

If you?re in the Parkesburg area and want to donate coffee* to my bloodstream, you?ll find me at 434 Main St.

*I prefer a medium cup of Dunkins?Donuts?with cream and sugar : )

*****

The following burdens are not necessarily funeral service specific, but many, if not all, come with this profession.? Those of us who stay in this profession do so because we find serving others in their darkest hour extremely rewarding, yet there are burdens to be borne. ??Here?s ten.

One. A Lack of Personal Boundaries.

The phone rings at 3 AM in the morning with a hospice nurse on the other end of the line telling you that so-and-so has died, that so-and-so?s family is requesting your services and that the family of so-and-so is ready for you to come and pick up so-and-so.

The phone rings at 6 PM the next day.? Someone needs to see so-and-so ? he simply can?t believe so-and-so is dead and must come to the funeral home at once to see so-and-so.

Two. Depression.

While those of us who stay in this business do so because we love serving people, the lack of personal boundaries can lead to depression.

Depression, because my son?s baseball game was at 6 PM, but somebody in so-and-so?s family needed to see so-and-so this very minute.? Depression because the emotional needs of others somehow always trump my personal life needs.? And all of a sudden ?I?m not a good father? and ?I?m not happy with my life.?

Three. Psychosis.

Psychologist Carl Rogers described how he ?literally lost my ?self?, lost the boundaries of myself?and I became convinced (and I think with some reason) that I was going insane?.? When we in human service, and death service, become pulled into the whole narrative of death and dying, we can lose ourselves.

Four. Smells.

An iron stomach I have not.? Putrid smells, this business has many.? This is a burden that comes home with me ? a burden that my wife often notices shortly after I walk through the door.

Five. Life Secrets, Death Secrets and Practice Secrets.

When a person commits suicide or dies from an overdose, there are times when the family simply wants to keep the manner of death a secret from the public.

I don?t mind carrying the burden of a secret, but when you live in a small town where suspicion can run rampant, secrets can become heavy.

Some things we see will remain with us forever.? They are so disturbing, so terrible that we do the world a favor by not sharing them.

Six. Isolation by Profession.

Death makes us different ? not necessarily unique, just different.? This difference creates a chasm between us and those not immersed in death.? Sure, police, doctors, psychologist, etc. have chasms created by their professions, but ours ? because of the fear, sadness and undefined hours of our practice ? creates us into something other.

Seven. Death itself.

Death can be a beautiful experience in the life of a family.? But when that death is tragic and unexpected, death is a heavy burden for both the family and for those who serve the family.? Specifically, when the death is a young person, our entire staff becomes agitated and moody.

Eight. Workaholism.

Many funeral homes are small businesses that don?t have enough staff for shift work.? In order to serve our families (so that they?ll return), we have learned that the way to overcome the depression and potential psychosis that can come with a lack of personal boundaries is to marry the business.? We make the work our life.? Such work addiction pleases the families we work for, but can leave our personal families destitute.

And while many of us don?t carry the burden of workaholism, we do carry the burden of fighting off the addiction.

Nine. Death Logistics Stress.

Every business has stress.? Some more and some less.? And while funeral service can?t claim a quantitative difference in stress, it can claim to have its very own type of stress.? To grasp the type of stress surrounding a funeral, imagine planning a wedding in five days, except where there?s joy, sadness exists, and where there?s usually a bride, a dead body lies in state.

Ten. Dress clothes ?

? in the summer heat.? Dress clothes in the dead of winter. ?We are one of the few ? armed service members are the only others I can think of ? professions that wears suits outdoors as a matter of practice. ?There?s nothing like having sweat drip down your back and into your crack.? Well, nothing except maybe freezing your dress shoe covered toes in a foot of snow.

GlaxoSmithKline to pay $3B for health fraud

(AP) ? British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline will pay $3 billion in fines ? the largest health care fraud settlement in U.S. history ? for criminal and civil violations involving 10 drugs that are taken by millions of people.

The Justice Department said Monday that GlaxoSmithKline PLC will plead guilty to promoting popular antidepressants Paxil and Wellbutrin for unapproved uses. The company also will plead guilty to failing to report to the government for seven years some safety problems with diabetes drug Avandia, which was restricted in the U.S. and banned in Europe after it was found in 2007 to sharply increase the risks of heart attacks and congestive heart failure.

In addition to the fine, Glaxo agreed to resolve civil liability for promoting Paxil, Wellbutrin, asthma drug Advair and two lesser-known drugs for unapproved uses. The company also resolved accusations that it overcharged the government-funded Medicaid program for some drugs, and that it paid kickbacks to doctors to prescribe several drugs including Flovent for asthma and Valtrex for genital herpes.

Sir Andrew Witty, Glaxo's CEO, expressed regret Monday and said the company has learned "from the mistakes that were made."

This is the latest in a string of settlements related to drug companies putting profits ahead of patients. In recent years, the government has cracked down on drugmakers' tactics, which include marketing medicines for unapproved uses. While doctors are allowed to prescribe medicines for any use, drugmakers cannot promote them in any way that is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

"Let me be clear, we will not tolerate health care fraud," Deputy Attorney General James M. Cole said Monday during a news conference at the Justice Department in Washington.

Glaxo is scheduled to plead guilty to the criminal charges and have the settlement approved at a hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in Boston. In addition to the $3 billion penalty ? which includes a $1 billion criminal fine and forfeiture and $2 billion to resolve civil claims ? Glaxo agreed to be monitored by the government for five years to ensure that it complies with marketing and other rules.

The case against Glaxo was originally brought in January 2003 by two whistleblowers, former Glaxo sales representatives Greg Thorpe and Blair Hamrick. In January 2011, the federal government joined in the case.

Prosecutors said Glaxo illegally promoted Paxil for treating depression in children from 1998 to 2003, even though it wasn't approved for anyone under age 18. The company also promoted Wellbutrin from 1999 through 2003 for weight loss, sexual dysfunction, substance addictions and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, although it was only approved for treatment of major depression.

Starting in 2001, Thorpe reported to his district manager, then to Glaxo's human resources department and finally to Glaxo's chief of global compliance about a number of improper marketing practices. The compliance chief began an internal investigation, which confirmed Thorpe's allegations through various ways including marketing materials and interviews with Hamrick and other sales representatives, according to lawyers for the two men.

Brian Kenney and Tavy Deming, attorneys for the two salesmen, said top management did nothing to stop the illegal practices, pressured Thorpe to resign and later fired Hamrick for allegedly not cooperating with the company's investigation of one kickback allegation.

According to Deming, Hamrick reported that at a 2000 regional meeting of sales representatives in Las Vegas, they were directed to promote Wellbutrin as the drug that makes patients happy, skinny and sexually turned on, part of a catchy national slogan repeated to doctors.

Thorpe said in a statement Monday that he was penalized after he reported kickbacks being paid to doctors and sales reps encouraging doctors to promote drugs for unapproved uses, including using Paxil and Wellbutrin in children.

"In the end, I was told that my concerns were not valid. I was put on leave" after a 24-year career, Thorpe said. He added that he was told to either "take a severance package or go back to work for the same people, doing the same things I had reported to management."

Thorpe and Hamrick ? and two other sales rep whistleblowers who joined the case shortly after them ? will receive an as-yet undecided portion of the $3 billion settlement.

The Glaxo case underscores how aggressive the Justice Department has become in going after similar cases. In a May settlement, Abbott Laboratories pleaded guilty and agreed to pay the government a $700 million criminal fine and forfeiture for promoting Depakote, approved for bipolar disorder and epilepsy, for use in patients with dementia and autism. That was on top of civil settlements with numerous states and the federal government totaling $800 million.

Prior to the Glaxo settlement, the record-setting case involved Pfizer Inc., the world's biggest drugmaker. It paid the government $2.3 billion in 2009 in criminal and civil fines for improperly marketing 13 different drugs, including erectile-dysfunction drug Viagra and cholesterol fighter Lipitor, the top-selling drug in the world for years. Pfizer was accused of encouraging doctors to prescribe its drugs with free golf, massages and junkets to posh resorts.

"For far too long, we have heard that the pharmaceutical industry views these settlements merely as the cost of doing business," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Stuart F. Delery, head of Justice's civil division. "Today's resolution seeks not only to punish wrongdoing and recover taxpayer dollars, but to ensure GSK's future compliance with the law."

Study: British police say expect more riots

Kerim Okten / EPA, file

Police officers detain suspected rioters in Enfield, North London, Britain, on August 9, 2011.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

LONDON -- British police expect another outburst of rioting in London -- possibly even this summer as the country prepares to host the Olympic Games -- as economic hardship pushes more people towards social unrest, a study found on Monday.

Thousands of angry young people rioted through the streets of London and other big cities last August, looting shops and burning buildings, prompting pledges from government to crack down on crime.

The joint study by Britain's left-leaning Guardian newspaper and the London School of Economics was based on interviews with 130 officers caught up in the riots.

It found that the police expect more trouble but feel their ability to respond could be weakened by austerity measures.?Last year a riot in north London, which started after a peaceful protest against the killing of a local man by police on August 4, triggered similar scenes across the country's capital and in cities such as Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.?

Sad truth behind the London riot

"Police expect a repeat of the riots that spread across England last summer, and are concerned about whether they will have the resources to cope with future unrest on that scale," the study said. ?"Officers said further disorder was likely, with many citing worsening social and economic conditions as the potential cause."

The government wants to make cuts of about 20 percent to police budgets. Like all public sector workers, officers also face pay freezes and higher pension contributions.

Meanwhile, security is under international scrutiny in London as it prepares to host the Olympic Games from July 27 when thousands of tourists and sports fans are expected to flock to Britain.?

No direct correlation??
A former high-ranking member of London's Metropolitan police, the country's largest police force, cautioned against drawing a direct link?between economic hardship and civil unrest.

Rioters in London torched vehicles and buildings and looted shops in response to the fatal shooting of a local man by police. NBC's Martin Fletcher reports.

"It is accurate to say that police funding is coming under a lot of pressure," Bill?Tillbrook, the former head of the specialist firearms unit at the Met told msnbc.com. "But it is not as simple as saying that if there are fewer police officers, there will be more riots."?

Nevertheless, the study showed many of those interviewed felt more riots were likely or even "imminent." In a response it described as typical, the study said one superintendent from Manchester police said he expected more disorder "within the year."?

"I think if you have bad economic times, hot weather, some sort of an event that sets it off ... my answer is: yes, it could," he told the study.?

"Because I don't think anything has changed between now and last August, and the only thing that's different is people have thought: riots are fun."?

Photos: Riots break out in UK

Police were accused at the time of being too slow and ill-prepared in their response but many officers now feel budget cuts could only weaken their ability to deal with another wave of unrest, the study said.?

The vice chairman of the country's largest association of police officer agreed with many of the study's?conclusions.?

"Clearly we are in an austerity program. ?We are losing 20 percent of our budget over four years," Simon Reed told msnbc.com. ?"And the since disorder have lost 5,000 officers."

Indeed, more painful measures are expected as the coalition government makes cuts to plug the budget deficit. Public sector borrowing is due to fall from about 128 billion pounds ($200 billion) last year to 98 billion in 2013/14.?

Al-Qaida to Occupy: UK preps Olympics security

The economy fell back into recession around the turn of the year and while overall unemployment has fallen in recent months, the rate of joblessness among those aged 18-24 remains as high as 19.9 percent.?

The HMIC independent police watchdog, in a report on Monday, said police forces planned to cut six percent -- 5,800 fewer officers -- ?of frontline roles as a result of spending cuts.?

"In addition, plugging the outstanding 302-million-pound funding gap might require a further reduction of officer numbers," it said.?

Msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton and Reuters contributed to this report.?

(AP) ? The party that ruled Mexico with a tight grip for most of the last century has sailed back into power, promising a government that will be modern, responsible and open to criticism.

Though Institutional Revolutionary Party candidate Enrique Pena Nieto's margin of victory was clear in the preliminary count from Sunday's election, it was not the mandate the party had anticipated from pre-election polls that had at times shown the youthful, 45-year-old with support of more than half of Mexico's voters.

Instead, he won 38 percent support, about 6 to 7 points more than his nearest rival, with 92 percent of the votes counted, and he went to work immediately to win over the two-thirds who didn't vote for him, many of whom rejected his claim that he represented a reformed and repentant party.

"We're a new generation. There is no return to the past," he said in his victory speech. "It's time to move on from the country we are to the Mexico we deserve and that we can be ... where every Mexican writes his own success story."

But his top challenger, leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, refused to concede, saying he would await a full count and legal review. He won roughly 32 percent of the vote, according to the preliminary results. Lopez Obrador in 2006 paralyzed Mexico City streets with hundreds of thousands of supporters when he narrowly lost to President Felipe Calderon.

This time, only about 700 gathered at his campaign rally and he canceled plans to proceed to the Zocalo, the main square he filled as recently as Wednesday.

"We have information that indicates something different from what they're saying officially," he said. "We're not going to act in an irresponsible manner."

But Spanish President Mariano Rajoy already recognized Pena Nieto as the winner, sending him a telegram Monday congratulating him and offering him "all of Spain's support."

The PRI for 71 years ruled as a single party known for coercion and corruption, but also for building Mexico's institutions and social services. It was often accused of stealing elections, most infamously the 1988 presidential vote. But PRI governments were also known for keeping a lid on organized crime, whose battles with government and each other under Calderon have taken more than 50,000 lives and traumatized the country.

Repeating a popular belief of many Pena Nieto supporters, Martha Trejo, 37, of Tampico said, "He'll stabilize the cartels. He'll negotiate so they don't hurt innocents."

Pena Nieto in his victory speech vowed he won't make pacts with organized crime, but rather will focus on curbing violence.

Many predict he will build on Calderon's economic and security strategies but, working with a more friendly congress, may have more success. The main test of a new PRI will be how it handles corruption.

"We know there is some local corruption in the PRI with organized crime," said Andrew Selee of the Washington-based Mexico Institute. "The question is, 'Will they ignore it or go after it aggressively?'"

The vote Sunday went smoothly with the usual protests at polling places that ran out of ballots and a few arrests for small cases of alleged bribery or tampering of ballots. Josefina Vazquez Mota of the ruling National Action Party, Mexico's first woman candidate for a major party, conceded almost immediately after the polls closed and exit surveys showed her trailing in third place. The preliminary count gave her roughly 25 percent.

Her party unseated the PRI after 71 years in 2000 with the victory of Vicente Fox, who won more than 40 percent of vote, and again with Calderon in 2006, who won by a half percentage point over Lopez Obrador.

"I think this will be a major setback," businessman Leonardo Solis, 37, said of the PRI victory. "I don't think they've changed much, but we'll see soon enough."

Still, the PRI may actually lose seats in Congress despite winning the presidency. The PRI-led coalition with the Green Party had about 38 percent of the congressional vote, with 92 percent of ballots counted on Monday. The coalition won about 46 percent in the last legislative vote three years ago.

And while the PRI recaptured the governorships of the states of Jalisco and Chiapas, both of which it lost more than a decade ago, it apparently lost Tabasco, Lopez Obrador's home state, to Democratic Revolution. The leftist party also won the governor's race in Morelos, just south of Mexico City.

At the PRI headquarters in Mexico City, a party atmosphere broke out as the national results came in, with supporters in red dancing to norteno music.

Pena Nieto, who is married to a soap opera star, also has been dogged by allegations that he overspent his $330 million campaign funding limit and has received favorable coverage from Mexico television giant Televisa.

University students launched a series of anti-Pena Nieto marches in the final weeks of the campaign, arguing that his party hasn't changed since its days in power.

Pena Nieto praised their protests Sunday as a positive sign of the democracy and said he, too, wants to see Mexico change.

"You have given our party a second chance," he said. "We will honor that with results."

Is China really the world's top economy? Much of the world thinks so

They are wrong, of course, at least for the time being. America?s economy is much larger than China?s however you measure it, and when it comes to personal wealth, there is no contest.

But a recent 21-country survey by the Pew Research Center offers a snapshot of global perceptions of power, and the results are sobering for the United States.

World's top 5 economies. Where is China?

Americans themselves are almost evenly split over who they perceive to be the premier global economic heavyweight: 40 percent say the US, 41 percent say China. (Interestingly, the Chinese have no such illusions about themselves ? they put America ahead by a margin of 48 to 29.)

Europeans seem most overawed by the China hype, with 62 percent of Germans putting China at the top of the heap, compared with just 13 percent who still see America as the world?s top economic power. In Britain the split is 58-28, in Spain it?s 57-26.?

Worldwide, 42 percent of respondents put China ahead of America; 36 percent perceived it the other way around.

That 42 percent of respondents are off the mark. There are different ways to measure the size of a national economy, but even using the system most generous to the Chinese, called Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), the US economy was nearly half as big again as its nearest rival, the Chinese one, in 2010, according to the IMF. US Gross Domestic Product weighed in at $14.5 trillion against China?s $10.1 trillion, according to the September 2011 IMF report.?

If you go by straightforward GDP, America?s economy is two-and-a-half times as big as China?s according to the World Bank. And if you compare personal wealth, well, there is no comparison.

America?s per capita GDP came in at nearly $50,000 last year, while China?s was just over $8,000 at the most generous estimate ? about the same as Ecuador and Belize.

Of course you could use other criteria than mere size to judge which nation is the world?s leading economic power; innovation, for example.

But China still lags well behind the US in that field too. And when it comes to how much each country has invested abroad, Americans account for 20 percent of global foreign direct investment and the Chinese for only about 1.5 percent.

When it comes to energy, dynamism, and growth potential, the Chinese do look more impressive. And, of course, China?s population is five times bigger than America?s. At current growth rates, China probably will have the biggest economy in the world (measured on the basis of PPP) within 15 years.

But it hasn?t happened yet, whatever people around the world may believe.
