J. Cole, Eminem, 2 Chainz Just Missed 'Hottest MCs' Cut

T.I., Young Jeezy and Fabolous also enjoyed success in 2011 but fell short of MTV News' top 10.

MTV News' Hottest MCs in the Game debate isn't solely about the 10 MCs who make the hotly contested list.

Before MTV News' Hip-Hop Brain Trust convenes at the roundtable, each member submits his or her own individual list of 10 MCs they'd like to nominate for the discussion. After all of the nominees are tallied, approximately 20 rappers are taken into consideration; the artists with the most nominations are weighted at the top.

So outside the 10 chosen, MTV had a handful of other MCs to consider based on a combination of criteria like impact, buzz, sales, lyrics, style (commonly referred to as swag) and the intangibles. Though Maybach Music Group's Wale eventually had his #10 spot cemented, many were considered.

Now, MTV News presents our Hottest MCs honorable mentions:

J. Cole
J. Cole had a phenomenal 2011. His debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, has gone gold and yielded a platinum single with "Work Out." Cole, who was once an underground favorite, broadened his fanbase by touring with Rihanna on her Loud Tour.

T.I.
Tip might have gotten off to a late start, since he was released from prison at the very end of September, but the King of the South wasted no time getting back into the swing of things. Immediately after finishing his bid, Tip jumped on some of the hottest songs in rap, creating his own remixes to 2 Chainz's "Spend It," Future's "Magic" and the Throne's "N---as in Paris." Tip capped it all off on New Year's Day when he dropped his F--- Da City Up mixtape.

Eminem
Last year, Eminem stood as the #1 Hottest MC in the Game. It was hard to deny him after 2010's Recovery dominated the charts. Em's lyrical ability is never a question, and in 2011, King Mathers once again proved that very few (if any) can match him on the mic. Rather than churn out the commercial smashes he is known to make, Em took things back to the underground and hooked up with Royce Da 5'9" for their fan-favorite Bad Meets Evil EP Hell: The Sequel.

Young Jeezy
It may have taken the Snowman a minute to put out his long-awaited TM 103: Hustlerz Ambition album, but Jeezy wasn't just sitting around twiddling his thumbs. While fans salivated for his major-label release, Young fed the streets with a pair of DJ Drama-helmed mixtapes in 2011. (The Real Is Back and The Real Is Back 2). By the time Jeezy finally released his latest installment from his Thug Motivation series in December, he had earned himself a #1 rap album.

2 Chainz
A little artistic reinvention never hurt anybody. The MC formerly known as Tity Boi broke out from his group Playaz Circle and embarked on a solo mission that paid huge dividends. As 2 Chainz, the ATL standout fired up the streets with mixtapes like Codeine Cowboy and T.R.U. Realigion. With street bangers like "Spend It" under his belt, 2 Chainz stood as the poster child for rap's underground and then cashed in when he signed his major-label deal with Def Jam this month.

Fabolous
With or without an album, Brooklyn's Fabolous consistently slays his completion. Fab didn't release his Loso's Way 2 LP, but he did serve his fans a dose of that raw with his Christmas Day mixtape There Is No Competition 3: Death Comes in 3's. On the tape, Funeral Fab goes in, freestyling over beats made famous by Tyga, Travis Porter and, of course, 2 Chainz. By the end of the 15-track ride, Fab proved that he is eternally hot no matter what his competitors may throw at him.

What do you think of our list? Sound off on MTV News' "Hottest MCs in the Game VII" using the hashtag #HottestMC!

Cancer risks. Investment alternatives. Calories. Numbers are everywhere in daily life, and they figure into all sorts of decisions. A new article published in Current Directions in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, examines how people who are numeratethat's like literacy, but for numbersunderstand numbers better and process information differently so that they ultimately make more informed decisions.

People who are numerate are more comfortable thinking about numbers and are less influenced by other information, says Ellen Peters of Ohio State University, the author of the new paper. For example, in one of Peters's studies, students were asked to rate undergraduates who received what looked like different test scores. Numerate people were more likely to see a person who got 74% correct and a person who got 26% incorrect as equivalent, while people who were less numerate thought people were doing better if their score was given in terms of a percent correct.

People make decisions based on this sort of information all the time. For example, "A lot of people take medications," Peters says. Every drug has benefits and potential risks, and those can be presented in different ways. "You can talk about the 10 percent of the population that gets the side effect or the 90 percent that does not." How you talk about it will influence how dangerous the drug seems to be, particularly among people who are less numerate.

Other research has shown that only less numerate people respond differently to something that has a 1 in 100 chance of happening than something that has a 1 percent chance of happening. The less numerate see more risk in the 1 in 100 chanceeven though these numbers are exactly the same. This has implications for how policy makers and others should communicate about the risks of medicines, earthquakes, climate change, and the stock market.

"Numbers are really just abstract symbols, and we have to bring meaning to them somehow," Peters says. Think of all the very different ideas that can go with the number nine: 9F, $9 billion, and a 9 percent chance of a tsunami. "In general, people who are numerate are better able to bring consistent meaning to numbers and to make better decisions," Peters says. "It suggests that courses in math and statistics may be the educational gift that keeps on giving."

Jersey City clears 'Jersey Shore' spinoff (AP)

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? Jersey City taxpayers won't be footing the bill for police assigned to security for the women of "Jersey Shore" and all the attention that comes with them.

New Jersey's second largest city has issued a permit to producers to film a spinoff of the reality series, featuring Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "JWoww" Farley. Filming is expected to begin later this month in the city's Grove Street Path neighborhood.

Police spokesman Edgar Martinez said Thursday the production company in charge of the show will pay for off-duty police officers to provide security and will pay for any additional officers if they are needed. In addition, he said, the production crew won't be taking parking spots from residents but will use pay lots.

Nearby Hoboken last week denied the show a permit to film, citing safety and quality of life concerns for residents of the city along the Hudson River.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said he believes the show is an opportunity to promote the city.

Guidelines For Planning Your Home Improvement Project In An ...

Prior to beginning any sort of home improvement project; if you can create a plan before you start, you will be better prepared. You should not only have complete material and price lists, but also have an idea of how long the project may take. It is easy to over shoot your budget is you have not adequately formulated your plan. Below we will be offering you a few ideas that may help your project be more successful.

It really is critical to consider things at this web site into mind!

Your goal, when planning for your home improvement project, is to make your life easier in the future as well as right now. Any room that you create at your home should be something you will use for many years. If you are moving shortly, you might not want to start on this project. If you are planning on selling, you might want to add this onto your home to increase its value. Otherwise, you probably do not want to add on anything to your home.

If you are thinking about building a room specifically for your children to play in, this will not be usable in a few years which is something you may want to consider. Before doing any major renovations, also consider that some changes actually reduce the value of a home, so always do your research and think ahead.

One of the best ways to save money on any home improvement project is to renovate existing rooms instead of building new ones from the ground up (e.g. ? your kitchen or bathroom) Repairing everything in a certain room is really not necessary or cost-effective ? simple changes can make quite a difference! Instead of gutting an entire room, you might want to consider painting it to change its overall appeal. It simply is not necessary to replace everything in a room to make it look better; simple changes are less costly and are sometimes more effective. So before you commit to an expensive renovation to your kitchen or bathroom, consider if you could get by with some piecemeal improvements.

Just a brief side note ? if you?d like to read nore about this, check out this web-site: coupon host gator

Make sure the project you are considering will be feasible in the end. Maybe you are thinking of your dream kitchen or addition, but when it comes to resale value it can be hard to second guess what the new owner may prefer. Thankfully, we all have our own ideas on taste and style; therefore you will not know what type of improvements will best suit them. One example of an addition that may not be pleasing to a possible buyer is a swimming pool; due to the maintenance aspect. Rather than worry about what a future buyer may find appealing with your home; upgrade the things that will make you feel better.

Hopefully this article has helped you understand what you need to do in regard to any home improvement project you are considering doing. The quality of helpers that you hire for the project, along with the decisions that you need to make in order to improve your home?s value, should always be considered seriously. Consider all of this information very carefully, and then make a plan of action to help your home improvement project deliver the results that you want to see.

AP Interview: Homecoming inspires wounded Marine (AP)

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. ? Shot through the upper back on a rooftop in Afghanistan and gasping for breath after a bullet ripped through his chest, Marine Sgt. Ben Tomlinson had a fear worse than death.

Heat and shock from the round damaged his spinal cord, paralyzing him from the chest down. This injury was so much worse than one nine months before, when he'd been hit by a mortar blast during his first tour in Afghanistan. Yet through all the pain, Tomlinson was haunted by the idea people back home wouldn't remember him, that they wouldn't even know he was hurt.

"That's the worst fear for everyone that gets deployed," said Tomlinson, who now uses a wheelchair. "It's that no one is thinking about them."

Tomlinson's hometown of Jacksonville, in northeast Alabama, made sure he wouldn't feel forgotten, staging a welcome home celebration veteran groups say should be a national model now that fighting has ended in Iraq. While St. Louis is the only large city to hold a major parade for returning veterans, thousands of people lined the streets of Jacksonville and packed the town square to greet Tomlinson upon his return from the war, waving flags and giving money to help make his home more wheelchair accessible.

"We need this to happen much more around the country, but (I) do not believe it actually occurs as much as it is needed because the wars have been going for such a long period of time," said Vietnam veteran John Stewart, who heads Operation Welcome Home in Inverness, Fla.

More than being just a one-day morale boost, Tomlinson said the lavish homecoming in the city of 7,700 people inspired him to work harder on his rehabilitation so friends and neighbors knew he is trying hard to get better.

"This is not the way I am going to be forever," said Tomlinson, 24, working out with dumbbells in the TV room at his home. He's getting stronger little by little, his biceps filling out after months shuttling between hospitals and doctor's appointments, and he's hopeful of walking again one day.

Tomlinson played football and baseball and ran track at Jacksonville High School before graduating in 2006 and going to Mississippi College to play football. But college ball just wasn't the same as high school athletics, and he took a buddy's suggestion to consider the Marines. He was interested in joining a Force Reconnaissance squad, the "baddest of the bad," as Tomlinson put it. These are the Marines on the tip of the spear, the troops who go first into hostile areas.

"It sounded pretty intense," said Tomlinson. It was.

Tomlinson arrived in Afghanistan in May 2009. Three months later, while securing a road during a drug raid in a marketplace, a mortar hit the top of a building near where he was standing. Shrapnel peppered his body.

"I got a piece in the neck, a piece hit me in the nose, but the worst part of that was getting a piece stuck in the radial nerve in my arm," said Tomlinson. "There's really no relief from pain when you have something stuck in your nerve."

Surgery followed, and Tomlinson was back on duty three weeks later after taking a cast off his arm with the help of a medic, who removed his stitches. Tomlinson's tour of duty ended but he was back in Afghanistan for another seven-month stint by November 2010.

With only one or two missions left on his second tour, Tomlinson was atop a roof in an Afghan village controlled by the Taliban while other troops looked for weapons and bomb-making materials.

"We were doing that for about five or six hours. I want to say it was the middle of the day, and I got up to move and as soon as I got up ...," Tomlinson said. "It wasn't like I heard anything or really felt anything. It was like a sudden shock to my body, and then my vision went kind of obscured, and I couldn't move and I just started falling back and `boom,' hit the roof, and that's when I realized I'd probably been hit."

The slug entered the back of Tomlinson's left shoulder near the base of his neck and traveled to his chest, damaging his spine and leaving him unable to move from the chest down. Evacuated from Afghanistan first to Germany and then the United States, he spent months at a hospital in Tampa, Fla., before returning home to Alabama on Jan. 18 to a hero's welcome: People lined the roads for miles leading from the airport to Jacksonville, and U.S. flags were everywhere. Businesses all over town put out welcome home signs.

Several thousand people filled the town square for a ceremony, and some 800 students and faculty from Jacksonville High greeted him at his house, which is directly across the street from the school.

"All I could say was, `Wow,'" Tomlinson said.

With such a welcome home, Tomlinson said he knew he hadn't been forgotten ? his worst fears weren't realized.

"People I didn't even know were thinking about me when this happened," he said.

Stewart, himself a Vietnam veteran, said such receptions can only help troops coming home from multiple deployments after a decade of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"Everyone is familiar with the horrendous reception we Vietnam veterans received when returning from the war and we must never, ever let that happen again," he said. "We must honor our heroes. We must remember their sacrifices."

How to (not) write a great presentation script, part one | How To ...

By Dr Simon Raybould of Curved Vision

Many thanks to one of my favorite experts on presentation skills for sharing his brilliant advice with us here?

I?d like to start with a summary of what I?m going to say ? and this has got to be the easiest blog topic to summarize I?ve had to tackle in a long, long time.? Of course, the hard part is how to actually carry out what?s in the summary? but the summary itself is simple!

The key thing you need to look out for (and avoid) when you?re writing a presentation script is this: it mustn?t sound like you wrote a script.

See?? Told you it was easy!

The thing is, for the vast majority of us, we write in a different ?voice? to how we speak. We use different words, different patterns and different levels of formality: we tend to move towards the formal in the written word.

Let?s take that last bit as an example ?we tend move towards the formal in the written word?.? I wrote it like that because that?s how I write (unless I?m making a conscious effort not to). If I was talking to you in a pub, in a cafe or from a stage in a presentation however, I?d probably say something more like ?When we write stuff down, most of us get a bit more formal?. It means the same thing, it?s just a more relaxed way of phrasing it.

With the exception of (good) speechwriters, writing something so that it sounds exactly as we?d say it is very tricky. Very tricky indeed? which is why good speech-writers are well paid, I?d say! (Note from Suze: you?re right about the first part, Simon; I just wish you were right about the second part, too!)

No matter how well you deliver a written speech it?s still going to sound like a written speech and as such it?s not going to engage with your audience so well. People don?t like to ?receive? ? they prefer to ?be engaged with? ? and that means that for maximum effect on your audience you need to sound like you?re relaxed and speaking to them personally. How can you do that from a script?

So what can you do about it?

Personally, my preferred option is to know my subject area so well that I don?t write a formal speech. I start with the oral presentation in my head and so I use one of the many (seriously, there are lots!) of tools for defining structure and then work from that in defined steps until I?m on stage. I?m not going into detail about how to do that because I?m assuming that if you?re reading Suze?s blog you?re more of a writer than a speaker and this is a speaker?s approach, not a writers ? in fact it probably doesn?t even make sense to a writer! :)

The alternative is approach is to start with your speech, written as you would write it and then work on that to make it sound more natural when you deliver it orally. It?s a different mindset but hopefully it can get you to the same point!

Now, obviously, you can do at least some of this work on your script by reading what you?ve written and (with your hand on your heart) asking yourself if you can re-word it to sound more natural when it?s spoken out loud. I suggest you have a go at this before you use any tricks below because it helps? but it?s not enough.

Find out what more you need to do in part two of Dr Simon Raybould?s ?How to (not) write a great presentation script? ? here on HowToWriteBetter next week!

Dr Simon Raybould?s career started in research (into the cause of childhood cancer). He?s now one of the UK?s leading?presentation skills trainers. He?s also in demand as a conference speaker, specializing in personal resilience, stress and confidence.

U.S. Tourists To Israel Advised To Dress Modestly

By Michele Chabin
Religion News Service

JERUSALEM (RNS) The U.S. State Department is advising visitors to Jerusalem to dress modestly when visiting certain neighborhoods, or to avoid the areas entirely, in hopes of not provoking local sensitivities.

The State Department guidance did not specify which neighborhoods are considered problematic, or what, exactly, constitutes "modest" attire.

The Jerusalem advisory, updated on Jan. 10, says travelers "should exercise caution at religious sites on holy days, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays" and "dress appropriately" when visiting ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods and the Old City of Jerusalem, where religious Jews, Muslims and Christians live in distinct quarters.

The warning notes that most roads into ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods are blocked off on Friday nights, Saturdays, and Jewish holidays, and that "assaults on secular visitors, either for being in cars or for being 'immodestly dressed' have occurred in these neighborhoods."

The advisory was added to the State Department's website for travel to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. It comes in the wake of many recent incidents in which ultra-Orthodox Jewish extremists physically or verbally attacked women they said were dressed immodestly.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish women cover up everything except their faces, necks and hands.

In Beit Shemesh, a city between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, extremists have attacked religious schoolgirls on their way to school, deeming them not religious enough.

For years, ultra-Orthodox Jews have also stoned cars driving in or near their neighborhoods on the Sabbath or holidays.

Egyptians incensed after 74 die in soccer tragedy (Reuters)

PORT SAID, Egypt (Reuters) ? Egyptians incensed by the deaths of 74 people in clashes at a soccer stadium staged protests on Thursday as fans and politicians accused the ruling generals of failing to prevent the deadliest incident since Hosni Mubarak was overthrown.

Young men blocked roads near the state television building and the capital's landmark Tahrir Square, and a crowd gathered at Cairo's main rail station hoping to see relatives returning from the game in Port Said.

As covered bodies from Egypt's worst soccer disaster were unloaded from trains, thousands chanted "Down with military rule".

"Where is my son?" screamed Fatma Kamal, whose frantic phone calls seeking news of her 18-year-old had gone unanswered. "To hell with the football match ... Give me back my boy."

At least 1,000 people were injured in the violence on Wednesday evening when soccer fans invaded the pitch in the Mediterranean city after local team al-Masry beat visitors from Cairo's Al Ahli, Egypt's most successful club.

Hundreds of al-Masry supporters surged across the pitch to the visitors' end and panicked Ahli fans dashed for the exit. But the steel doors were bolted shut and dozens were crushed to death in the stampede, witnesses said.

Angry politicians denounced a thin security presence given the tense build-up to the match and accused Egypt's military leaders of allowing, or even causing, the fighting.

Parliament was holding an emergency session to discuss the violence. The Muslim Brotherhood, which dominates the assembly, said an "invisible" hand was behind the tragedy.

The Interior Ministry blamed the violence on a section of the crowd which it said had deliberately set out to cause "anarchy, a riot, and a stampede".

Hundreds gathered near the stadium in Port Said on Thursday, chanting: "Port Said people are innocent. This is a conspiracy."

The army's fiercest critics regularly accuse it of sowing disorder in Egypt to scupper a transition to civilian rule. The military has pledged to step aside by mid-year.

Activists called a march at 4 p.m. local time (9 a.m. ET) from Al Ahli's club ground in central Cairo to the interior ministry to protest at what one minister said it was Egypt's worst soccer disaster.

"The military council wants to prove that the country is heading towards chaos and destruction. They are Mubarak's men. They are applying his strategy when he said 'choose me or choose chaos'," said Mahmoud el-Naggar, 30, a laboratory technician and member of the Coalition of Revolutionary Youth in Port Said.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, 76, who heads the ruling military council, took the unusual step of speaking by telephone to a television channel owned by Al Ahli, vowing to track down the culprits. The army announced three days of national mourning.

"I deeply regret what happened at the football match in Port Said. I offer my condolences to the victims' families," Tantawi said in comments broadcast on state television.

It did little to assuage the anger of fans, who, like many Egyptians, are furious that Egypt is still plagued by lawlessness and frequent bouts of deadly violence almost a year after Mubarak was driven out and replaced by an army council.

"The people want the execution of the field marshal," fans chanted at the Cairo rail station. "We will secure their rights, or die like them," they said as covered bodies were unloaded from the trains.

ENRAGED

The post-match pitch invasion provoked panic among the crowd as rival fans fought. Most of the deaths were among people who were trampled in the crush of the panicking crowd or who fell or were thrown from terraces, witnesses and health workers said.

Television footage showed some security officers in the stadium showing no sign of trying to stop the pitch invasion. One officer was filmed talking on a mobile phone as people poured onto the field.

"The rush caused a stampede, people were pushing each other against the metal door and stepping on each other," said one witness who attended the match, 23-year-old Ossama El-Zayat.

"We saw riot police firing shots in the air, and then everyone got scared and kept pushing against the locked door. We didn't know whether police were firing live rounds or not. People were crying and dying," he said.

Several enraged politicians and ordinary Egyptians accused officials who are still in their jobs after the fall of Mubarak of complicity in the tragedy, or at least of allowing a security vacuum that has let violence flourish in the past 12 months.

"The security forces did this or allowed it to happen. The men of Mubarak are still ruling. The head of the regime has fallen but all his men are still in their positions," Albadry Farghali, a member of parliament for Port Said, screamed in a telephone call to live television.

Some saw the violence as orchestrated to target the "Ultras", Al Ahli fans whose experience confronting police at soccer matches was turned with devastating effect against Mubarak's heavy-handed security forces in the uprising.

They played a significant role in defending Cairo's Tahrir Square, the heart of the uprising against Mubarak, when men on camels and horses charged protesters last year. Thursday is the anniversary of the notorious February 2 camel charge.

"All that happened is not for the sake of a game. It's political. It was orchestrated by the military council to target the Ultras," said Abdullah el-Said, a 43-year-old driver in Port Said. "The military council wanted to crush the Ultras because they sided with protesters ever since the revolution began."

Yet many Egyptians still see the army as the only guarantor of security. When one activist in a group outside a hospital accused the army of sowing chaos, a man chimed in blaming the youths: "Security has to return to the streets. Enough with all those protests that caused this security vacuum," he yelled.

'THUGS'

Some blamed the violence on "thugs", the hired hands or plain clothes police officers of Mubarak's era who would often emerge from police lines to crush dissent to his rule.

"Unknown groups came between the fans and they were the ones that started the chaos. I was at the match and I saw that the group that did this is not from Port Said," said Farouk Ibrahim.

"They were thugs, like the thugs the National Democratic Party used in elections," he said, referring to Mubarak's former party and the polls that were routinely rigged in its favor.

The two soccer teams, al-Masry and Al Ahli, have a history of fierce rivalry. Witnesses said fighting began after Ahli fans unfurled banners insulting Port Said and one descended to the pitch carrying an iron bar at the end of the match.

"I saw people holding machetes and knives. Some were hit with these weapons, other victims were flung from their seats, while the invasion happened," Usama El Tafahni, a journalist in Port Said who attended the match, told Reuters.

Many fans died in a subsequent stampede, while some were flung off their seats onto the pitch and were killed by the fall. At the height of the disturbances, rioting fans fired flares straight into the stands.

Television footage showed fans running onto the field and chasing Al Ahli players. A small group of riot police formed a corridor to protect the players, but they appeared overwhelmed and fans were still able to kick and punch players as they fled.

Tantawi said a fact-finding committee would be set up and pledged that the army's plan to hand over power to civilians would not be derailed.

"Egypt will be stable. We have a roadmap to transfer power to elected civilians. If anyone is plotting instability in Egypt they will not succeed," he told Al Ahli's channel.

Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said 47 people were arrested and Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri held an emergency meeting of his security council that includes including Ibrahim and a military representative.

Egypt's football federation said it was indefinitely delaying matches for the Egyptian premier league. Al Ahli club said in a statement it was suspending all sports activities and holding three days of mourning.

'Soul Train' host Don Cornelius dead of suicide (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? "Soul Train" host Don Cornelius was the arbiter of cool, a brilliant TV showman who used his purring, baritone voice to seduce mainstream America into embracing black music and artists.

But the "love, peace, and SOUL!" he wished viewers as he closed each show for decades escaped him as his life descended into marital trouble, illness and, finally, a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday.

Police said they went to his Mulholland Drive home around 4 a.m. after receiving a call from one of his sons, who became concerned after being contacted by his father. Cornelius, 75, was found shot and was pronounced dead an hour later at a nearby hospital.

Authorities ruled out foul play, but have not found a suicide note and are talking to relatives about his mental state.

To music-hungry viewers, he was a smooth, sharp-dressed man who got them dancing to the hottest tracks going. The pop world's biggest stars recalled him as much more: A cultural groundbreaker who advanced African-American music and culture; a black entrepreneur who overcame racism by strength of will; a visionary who understood rap's emergence but criticized its rawness.

Aretha Franklin, an early "Soul Train" performer, called him "an American treasure."

"God bless him for the solid, good and wholesome foundation he provided for young adults worldwide," she said, "and the unity and brotherhood he singlehandedly brought about with his most memorable creation of `Soul Train.'"

Donald Cortez Cornelius was born Sept. 27, 1936, in Chicago. After high school, he served as a Marine in Korea. Cornelius was working as an insurance salesman when he spent $400 on a broadcasting course and landed a part-time job in 1966 as announcer, newsman and DJ on WVON radio. That's where listeners first heard the distinctively measured and rich Cornelius rumble.

Cornelius began moonlighting at WCIU-TV when Roy Wood, his mentor at WVON, moved there, and won a job producing and hosting "A Black's View of the News." When the station wanted to expand its "ethnic" programming, he pitched a black music show, and "Soul Train" was born.

"You want to do what you're capable of doing. If I saw (Dick Clark's) `American Bandstand' and I saw dancing and I knew black kids can dance better; and I saw white artists and I knew black artists make better music; and if I saw a white host and I knew a black host could project a hipper line of speech, and I did know all these things," then it was reasonable to try, he said.

"Soul Train," which began in 1970, followed some of the "Bandstand" format with its audience and young dancers. But that's where the comparisons stopped. Cornelius, the suave, ultra-cool emcee, made "Soul Train" appointment viewing.

"There was not programming that targeted any particular ethnicity," he said in 2006, then added: "I'm trying to use euphemisms here, trying to avoid saying there was no television for black folks, which they knew was for them."

Debra Lee, who is chairman and chief executive of Black Entertainment Television, was one of those youngsters who tuned in to the show. She said she would finish her chores early so she could check out the latest music, fashions and dance moves.

"His reach is just amazing, and personally he was such a charming man," she said, calling Cornelius a role model and "a great interviewer who knew how to connect to artists" and had "the best voice in the world."

With that voice, he helped bring the best R&B, soul and later hip-hop acts to TV. It was one of the first TV shows to showcase African-American artists including Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Barry White.

"You have to dream," Cornelius said in a 1995 interview. "I dreamed everything. I used to introduce Marvin Gaye in my living room. So when the time came that I was going to really introduce guys like Marvin Gaye and Steve Wonder, I had done it before."

"Soul Train" had a whimsical cartoon train and whistle that opened each show. And Cornelius would close each show with his sign-off: "Love, peace, and SOUL!" drawing out the pronunciation of the last word with his deep voice.

The show, with his sharp eye for talent, became the cornerstone of his entertainment empire. He acted as independent producer-host-salesman to bring "Soul Train" into partnership with Tribune Entertainment Co., which became the show's distributor in the 1980s.

The show chugged gradually onto TV screens nationwide: Only a handful of stations initially were receptive. Johnson Products Co., maker of Afro Sheen and other hair-care goods, was its major sponsor and the first black-owned company to sponsor a national weekly TV show. Years later, major advertisers including Coca-Cola and McDonald's joined.

"Soul Train" aired nationally from 1971 to 2006. Asked why it endured, he told The New York Times in 1995: "There is an inner craving among us all, within us all, for television that we can personally connect to." He stepped down as host in 1993, and sold it to MadVision Entertainment in 2008.

"Don Cornelius was a pioneer & a trailblazer," Earvin "Magic" Johnson wrote on Twitter. "He was the first African-American to create, produce, host & more importantly OWN his own show."

Though "Soul Train" became one of the longest-running syndicated shows in TV history, its power began to wane in the 1980s and `90s as American pop culture began folding in black culture instead of keeping it segregated.

By that time, there were more options for black artists to appear on mainstream shows. And on shows like "American Bandstand," blacks could be seen dancing along with whites.

But even when Michael Jackson became the King of Pop, there was still a need to highlight the achievements of African-Americans that were still marginalized at mainstream events. So Cornelius created the "Soul Train Awards," which would become a key honor for musicians. The series also spawned the Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and the Soul Train Christmas Starfest.

Along the way, however, Cornelius became estranged from a changing music scene that clashed with his relatively conservative taste. But while he suggested violently or sexually explicit gangsta rap should be labeled "X-rated," Cornelius said the focus should be on eliminating poverty and violence from low-income black communities.

DJ Scratch, the DJ from the rap act EPMD, tweeted on Wednesday that Cornelius "100% didn't like Hip Hop. But he realized that it was what the youth wanted. So again, I thank you Don."

Cornelius' world grew dark in recent years as he faced fallout from a divorce and other pressures. In 2009, he was sentenced to three years' probation after pleading no contest to misdemeanor spousal battery and, in his divorce case that year, he also mentioned having significant health problems.

He has two children, Anthony and Raymond, with his first wife, Delores Harrison.

Cornelius, who was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame in 1995 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said in 2006 he remained grateful to the musicians who made "Soul Train" the destination for the best and latest in black music.

"As long as the music stayed hot and important and good, that there would always be a reason for `Soul Train,'" he said.
