(AP) ? A Louisiana appeals court has upheld the murder conviction and life sentence for rapper C-Murder.

C-Murder, whose real name is Corey Miller, was convicted of shooting a teenager to death in 2002.

A three-judge panel from the state's 5th Circuit Court of Appeal on Wednesday rejected Miller's argument that he didn't get a fair trial.

In 2009, a jury convicted Miller of second-degree murder for shooting 16-year-old Steve Thomas during a confrontation at a nightclub.

Miller claims the judge who presided over his trial allowed jurors to hear prejudicial and unsubstantiated testimony that he threatened witnesses to the shooting. He also accused prosecutors of systematically eliminating black people from the jury.

But the 5th Circuit rejected those arguments.

One of Miller's attorneys didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Teen Mom 2 Recap: Leah Messer Gets Good News; Adam Lind & Kieffer Delp Wreak Havoc!

This week on Teen Mom 2, we got a bit of good news.

Very good news, in fact. Baby Ali is going to be alright. Her brain is fine, following weeks of worrying and a health scare that put everything into perspective.

If only the good news continued from there. Alas, Teen Mom 2 bad boys Adam Lind and Kieffer Delp continued to make their girls' lives a living hell at times.

Find out why in THG's +/- TM2 recap below!

Poor Chelsea Houska

Chelsea Houska is in bed, complaining on the phone to her father because Adam has abandoned her and taken baby Aubree with him. Dude, you took him back. Minus 5.

"That's your Prince Charming," her father explains. "That's the way he's always been, and you need to decide whether you're OK with that." To say the least. Plus 5.

Adam texts "I am keeping Aubree. Shut up." Could be worse. Wash.

Sympathizing with Adam isn't always the easiest thing to pull off, but at times we do. Not when he's calling Chelsea awful names certainly, but when he does try. Plus 2.

He's not all bad, always, but with Chelsea's neediness he is made to seem like it. Plus only 4, because as we said, the guy has issues. But Chelsea, get it together girl.

Minus 3 for her dad talking tough but still enabling her, too.

Kailyn's friend Stephanie asks, as if reading cue cards: "So are you and Jordan having sex?" "So are you having unprotected sex?" Totally natural questions. Minus 8.

Give MTV credit for the obvious PSA on birth control and discussions about sex with your partner, though, because at least they scripted something useful. Plus 10.

Kailyn gets a Mirena IUD, protecting her for five years. Very proactive. Plus 7.

Minus only 4 for Jordan's annoyed, confused, awkward response. He could try a little harder to seem less uncomfortable, but there is a camera crew in his grill.

Later on, Jordan apologizes and does the impossible as he makes Kailyn smile and laugh. Plus 20. You never know, this one could be a keeper, Kails!

Corey and Leah Picture

The results of Leah and Corey's baby daughter Ali's brain MRI are revealed: "Her brain is fine," the pediatrician tells her worried parents. PHEW. Plus 50, but ...

One, but not both of Ali's optic nerves is indeed small, and will likely affect her sight in that eye. But her brain is fine, and you can't fix that. So again, phew!

Corey says later, "She was made for glasses." Too true. Pink ones! Plus 10.

Jenelle Evans fails one of her college classes? There's a shocker! Minus 14.

For her daughter's 19th birthday Barbara gets her a tire-changing kit and jumper cables. Hey, when you've lived in a car, what could be more practical? Plus 40.

Sadly, nothing about J is practical. She's a ticking time bomb waiting to explode, and you'd best not be the guy (or girl) who gets in the way ... Minus 10.

Alas, Barbara will eventually learn that Jenelle is not being "truthful and honest" with her about her relationship with Kieffer, who she is not avoiding. Minus 15.

She herself drives him to the police station to answer her charges of domestic violence. Definitely the way to smooth things over. These two are toxic. Minus 20.

Jenelle: "I'm just happy this is my last year of being a teenager, just because, like, when you're in your teens like no one really takes you seriously." So when you turn 20, it's all gonna turn around? Kieffer is already 20, BT-Dubs. Minus 10.

At least he cut his hair. Plus 5.

EPISODE TOTAL: +64! SEASON TOTAL: +9!

Whale sperm, orgasmic feet top 2011 bad science list

LONDON | Tue Dec 27, 2011 7:11pm EST

LONDON (Reuters) - From whale sperm to colon cleansers to the shape of a woman's foot when she has an orgasm, celebrities did not disappoint during 2011 with their penchant for peddling suspect science in the world's media.

In its annual list of what it considers the year's worst abuses against science, the Sense About Science (SAS) campaign named reality TV star Nicole Polizzi, Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann and American singer-songwriter Suzi Quatro as top offenders, with their dubious views on why the sea is salty, the risks of cervical cancer vaccines and the colon.

"I used to get a lot of sore throats and then one of my sisters told me that all illnesses start in the colon. I started taking a daily colon cleanser powder mixed with fresh juice every morning and it made an enormous difference," Quatro told the Daily Mail newspaper.

But SAS was keen to dispel such myths. It asked qualified scientists from various disciplines to comment on some of the worst celebrity science offences.

"The colon is very important in some diseases, but it certainly is not the cause of all illnesses," said Melita Gordon, a consultant gastroenterologist said in the review.

"Sore throats do not come from your colon; they are caused by viruses that come in through your nose and mouth. Taking 'colon cleansers' has no beneficial effect on your throat - or on your colon."

While the review is partly about entertainment, the campaign group stresses it also has a serious aim - to make sure pseudo-science is not allowed to become accepted as true.

After Bachmann used an appearance on a television show to tell a story of a woman from Tampa, Florida, who said her daughter had become "mentally retarded" after getting an HPV vaccine designed to protect against cervical cancer, doctors said they feared the damage done may take many years to reverse.

"It's tempting to dismiss celebrity comments on science and health, but their views travel far and wide and, once uttered, a celebrity cancer prevention idea or environmental claim is hard to reverse," said SAS's managing director Tracey Brown.

"At a time when celebrities dominate the public realm, the pressure for sound science and evidence must keep pace."

The review also highlighted a bizarre quote from TV personality Polizzi, who declared recently: "I don't really like the beach. I hate sharks, and the water's all whale sperm. That's why the ocean's salty."

Simon Boxall, a marine expert and oceanographer dismissed Polizzi's suggestion. "It would take a lot of whale sperm to make the sea that salty," he said.

Some of the most intriguing pseudo-scientific suggestions came via repeated second hand information picked up at parties - never the most reliable source.

Christian Louboutin, a French footwear designer, was taken with something a fellow party guest told him about shoes.

"She said that what is sexual in a high heel is the arch of the foot, because it is exactly the position of a woman's foot when she orgasms. So putting your foot in a heel, you are putting yourself in a possibly orgasmic situation," he explained.

Kevan Wylie, a consultant in sexual medicine, responded drily that it's important to differentiate cause from effect.

"A woman's foot may be in this position during orgasm, but that does not mean that putting her foot into this position under other circumstances will result in orgasm," he said.

PFT: Bruised hand won't keep Romo from practice

New York Giants v Dallas CowboysGetty Images

On the surface, it?s easy to shrug at Sunday?s slate of games, given the sense that only a few postseason loose ends remain.? But as our good friend Ricky Diamond, producer extraordinaire at NBC Sports, points out, all but three of the games have meaning.

Unfortunately for FOX, all three of the meaningless games ? Redskins-Eagles, Bears-Vikings, Seahawks-Cardinals ? will be televised on its network.

Here are the implications of each of the other games.

Bills at Patriots:? New England clinches the top seed in the AFC with a win.? A loss combined with a win by the Steelers or Ravens would push the Pats to No. 2.

Jets at Dolphins:? New York remains alive for the second wild-card berth in the AFC.

Titans at Texans:? Ditto for the Titans.

Colts at Jaguars:? The Colts secure the No. 1 pick if they lose; if they win (and if the Rams lose to the 49ers), the pick goes to St. Louis.

Ravens at Bengals:? The Ravens need a win to clinch the AFC North and the No. 2 seed.? The Bengals must win to secure the second wild-card berth in the AFC.

Steelers at Browns:? A Steelers win plus a Ravens loss gives Pittsburgh the AFC North title and the No. 2 seed.? Throw in a Patriots loss, and the Steelers emerge with the No. 1 seed.

Chiefs at Broncos:? Denver clinches the AFC West with a victory.

Chargers at Raiders:? Oakland takes the AFC West with a victory and a loss by the Broncos.? The Raiders with a win also have a shot at the second AFC wild-card berth.

Panthers at Saints:? The Saints can capture the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a win and a 49ers loss.

Buccaneers at Falcons:? With a Falcons win and a Lions loss, Atlanta secures the No. 5 seed in the NFC, avoiding a potential return trip to New Orleans.

Lions at Packers:? With a win, the Lions clinch the fifth seed, avoiding the Saints in the wild-card round.

49ers at Rams:? A win by San Fran nails down the No. 2 seed; a loss by the Rams could deliver the top pick in the draft, if the Colts beat the Jaguars.

Cowboys at Giants:? A true playoff play-in game, the winner takes the NFC East.? The loser goes home.

And so be sure to ring in the New Year by keeping your eyes on every NFL game on Sunday.? (Except the three that don?t matter.) We?ll be watching them all ? including the three that don?t matter ? and bringing you all the pertinent information right here.

News is the communication of selected information on current events which is presented by print, broadcast, Internet, or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience.

Etymology

One theory claims that news developed as a special use of the plural form of new in the 14th century. In Middle English, the equivalent word was newes, like the French nouvelles and the German neues. Somewhat similar developments are found in some of the Slavic languages (Czech and Slovak), where there exists a word noviny ("news"), developed from the word nov? ("new"), and in the Celtic languages Welsh and Cornish, where there are the words newyddion and nowodhow, respectively from W. newydd and C. nowydh.

A folk etymology suggests that it is an acronym of the cardinal directions: north, east, west, and south.

History

Before the invention of newspapers in the early 17th century, official government bulletins and edicts were circulated at times in some centralized empires.

The first documented use of an organized courier service for the diffusion of written documents is in Egypt, where Pharaohs used couriers for the diffusion of their decrees in the territory of the State (2400 BC). This practice almost certainly has roots in the much older practice of oral messaging and may have been built on a pre-existing infrastructure.

In Ancient Rome, Acta Diurna, or government announcement bulletins, were made public by Julius Caesar. They were carved in metal or stone and posted in public places.

In China, early government-produced news sheets, called tipao, circulated among court officials during the late Han dynasty (second and third centuries AD). Between 713 and 734, the Kaiyuan Za Bao ("Bulletin of the Court") of the Chinese Tang Dynasty published government news; it was handwritten on silk and read by government officials. In 1582 there was the first reference to privately published newssheets in Beijing, during the late Ming Dynasty;

In Early modern Europe, increased cross-border interaction created a rising need for information which was met by concise handwritten newssheets. In 1556, the government of Venice first published the monthly Notizie scritte, which cost one gazetta. These avvisi were handwritten newsletters and used to convey political, military, and economic news quickly and efficiently to Italian cities (1500?1700)?? sharing some characteristics of newspapers though usually not considered true newspapers. Due to low literacy rates, news was at times disseminated by town criers.

Relation aller F?rnemmen und gedenckw?rdigen Historien, from 1605, is recognized as the world's first newspaper.

The oldest news agency is the Agence France-Presse (AFP). It was founded in 1835 by a Parisian translator and advertising agent, Charles-Louis Havas as Agence Havas.

In modern times, printed news had to be phoned in to a newsroom or brought there by a reporter, where it was typed and either transmitted over wire services or edited and manually set in type along with other news stories for a specific edition. Today, the term "breaking news" has become trite as commercial broadcasting United States cable news services that are available 24-hours a day use live satellite technology to bring current events into consumers' homes as the event occurs. Events that used to take hours or days to become common knowledge in towns or in nations are fed instantaneously to consumers via radio, television, mobile phone, and the Internet.

Newspapers

Most large cities in the United States historically had morning and afternoon newspapers. As the media evolved and news outlets increased to the point of near over-saturation, most afternoon newspapers were shut down. Morning newspapers have been gradually losing circulation, according to reports advanced by the papers themselves.

Commonly, news content should contain the "Five Ws" (who, what, when, where, why, and also how) of an event. There should be no questions remaining. Newspapers normally write hard news stories, such as those pertaining to murders, fires, wars, etc. in inverted pyramid style so the most important information is at the beginning. Busy readers can read as little or as much as they desire. Local stations and networks with a set format must take news stories and break them down into the most important aspects due to time constraints. Cable news channels such as BBC News, Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN, are able to take advantage of a story, sacrificing other, decidedly less important stories, and giving as much detail about breaking news as possible.

News organizations are often expected to aim for objectivity; reporters claim to try to cover all sides of an issue without bias, as compared to commentators or analysts, who provide opinion or personal point-of-view. Several governments impose certain constraints or police news organizations against bias. In the United Kingdom, for example, limits are set by the government agency Ofcom, the Office of Communications. Both newspapers and broadcast news programs in the United States are generally expected to remain neutral and avoid bias except for clearly indicated editorial articles or segments. Many single-party governments have operated state-run news organizations, which may present the government's views.

Even in those situations where objectivity is expected, it is difficult to achieve, and individual journalists may fall foul of their own personal bias, or succumb to commercial or political pressure. Similarly, the objectivity of news organizations owned by conglomerated corporations fairly may be questioned, in light of the natural incentive for such groups to report news in a manner intended to advance the conglomerate's financial interests. Individuals and organizations who are the subject of news reports may use news management techniques to try to make a favourable impression. Because each individual has a particular point of view, it is recognized that there can be no absolute objectivity in news reporting.

Newsworthiness

Newsworthiness is defined as a subject having sufficient relevance to the public or a special audience to warrant press attention or coverage.

In some countries and at some points in history, what news media and the public have considered "newsworthy" has met different definitions, such as the notion of news values. For example, mid-twentieth-century news reporting in the United States focused on political and local issues with important socio-economic impacts, such as the landing of a living person on the moon or the cold war. More recently, the focus similarly remains on political and local issues; however, the news mass media now comes under criticism for over-emphasis on "non-news" and "gossip" such as celebrities' personal social issues, local issues of little merit, as well as biased sensationalism of political topics such as terrorism and the economy. The dominance of celebrity and social news, the blurring of the boundary between news and reality shows and other popular culture, and the advent of citizen journalism may suggest that the nature of ?news? and news values are evolving and that traditional models of the news process are now only partially relevant. Newsworthiness does not only depend on the topic, but also the presentation of the topic and the selection of information from that topic.

Nigerians fear more church attacks after 39 killed (AP)

MADALLA, Nigeria ? In the chaos after the Christmas terror attack on a Catholic church, one mortally wounded man cradled his wounded stomach and begged a priest for religious atonement. "Father, pray for me. I will not survive," he said.

At least 35 people died at St. Theresa Catholic Church and dozens were wounded as radical Muslim militants launched coordinated attacks across Africa's most populous nation within hours of one another. Four more people were killed in other violence blamed on the group known as Boko Haram.

It was the second year in a row that the extremists seeking to install Islamic Shariah law across the country of 160 million have staged Christmas attacks. Last year, a series of bombings on Christmas Eve killed 32 people in Nigeria.

On Monday, tried to clean the sanctuary of the damaged church, while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris. Crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ. Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the bombing at his post-Christmas blessing Monday, urging people to pray for the victims and Nigeria's Christian community.

"In this moment, I want to repeat once again with force: Violence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction and death. Respect, reconciliation and love are the only path to peace," he said.

The African Union also condemned the attacks and pledged to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.

"Boko Haram's continued acts of terror and cruelty and absolute disregard for human life cannot be justified by any religion or faith," said a statement attributed to AU commission chairman Jean Ping.

On Sunday, a bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast. Three people died in those assaults.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Sharia system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended."

Boko Haram has carried out increasingly sophisticated and bloody attacks in its campaign to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria. The group, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege" in the local Hausa language, is responsible for at least 504 killings this year alone, according to an Associated Press count.

Last year, a series of Christmas Eve bombings in Jos claimed by the militants left at least 32 dead and 74 wounded. The group also claimed responsibility for the Aug. 26 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja that killed 24 people and wounded 116 others.

While initially targeting enemies via hit-and-run assassinations from the back of motorbikes after the 2009 riot, violence by Boko Haram now has a new sophistication and apparent planning that includes high-profile attacks with greater casualties.

That has fueled speculation about the group's ties as it has splintered into at least three different factions, diplomats and security sources say. They say the more extreme wing of the sect maintains contact with terror groups in North Africa and Somalia.

Targeting Boko Haram has remained difficult, as sect members are scattered throughout northern Nigeria and the nearby countries of Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Analysts say political considerations also likely play a part in the country's thus-far muted response: President Goodluck Jonathan, a Christian from the south, may be hesitant to use force in the nation's predominantly Muslim north.

Speaking late Sunday at a prayer service, Jonathan described the bombing as an "ugly incident."

"There is no reason for these kind of dastardly acts," the president said in a ceremony aired by the state-run Nigerian Television Authority. "It's one of the burdens as a nation we have to carry. We believe it will not last forever."

Israel halts defense system sale to Turkey

Relations between Israel and Turkey have deteriorated further. The Ministry of Defense has ordered Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: ESLT; TASE: ESLT) to cancel a contract with the Turkish Air Force for the supply of airborne intelligence gathering systems. The contract was signed jointly with Elbit unit El-Op and IAI unit Elta in late 2009.

Elbit Systems refused to comment today. Defense sources familiar with the matter said that the Ministry of Defense had given the grounds of the instruction to the two companies as "diplomatic considerations". The companies were told that the export licenses necessary for continued performance of the contract will not be renewed.

In the past few days, the companies approached Ministry of Defense director-general Udi Shani and demanded compensation for the damage they will be caused by the decision not to renew the export licenses. Sources informed "Globes" today that Shani is in talks with the representatives of IAI and Elbit Systems, attempting to reach an arrangement that will satisfy those involved. Such an arrangement has not yet been accieved, and both companies fear substantial damage to their financial results.

Elbit's share of the agreement with the Turks is $87 million and IAI's $54 million. The systems were to have been supplied to the Turkish Air Force over four years. Defense sources said that the systems in question were among the most advanced of their kind.

Before the crisis in Israeli-Turkish relations erupted, there was close military cooperation between the two countries and substantial arms sales. Among other deals, IAI sold the Turks UAVS, Elbit Systems sold electronic systems, and IMI had a large project to upgrade Turkish tanks.

A defense source commented, "Relations between the two countries are important and Israel has done a great deal to improve them. All the same, Israel has responsibility for every defense product that obtains an export license, and the decisions on this matter relate one specific system, and not to Israeli-Turkish relations in general."

The Ministry of Defense said today in response, "In general, the Ministry of Defense is not wont to detail the considerations and the information that form the basis of defense exports policy decisions. The Ministry of Defense assesses the situation constantly with all the relevant parties, and decisions are arrived at in a professional manner, and in accordance with diplomatic and political considerations."

Reggie Fil-Aime Of Nintendo Talks Facebook Gaming And Free-to ...

Social games aren't video games, in a sense. They don't really offer that experience. Reggie is correct in saying they don't really evolve. What's going to keep me playing a social game? Nothing. They're cool for a day, then you play for another day because your friends are, and then they quit, and you move on. Doing the same thing repeatedly for very little payoff isn't fun. Having to pay money, or wait hours, to progress, also isn't fun. When I can sit down, sink hours into a social game, and actually feel like coming back the next day, I'll know they're on the right track.

The only games I've really put time into, are the ones that are building off older games. Tetris is fun. Words with Friends was all right. Bejeweled is entertaining. I have yet to find an original facebook game that can really hold my attention. Knights of the Crystal or whatever it is, was fun for awhile, but it's so fundamentally flawed that I had trouble going back to it, and only did so because a friend of mine played.

F2P falls into the same hole. The game isn't free. Developers don't make money on free. Their primary goal is to shoe-horn as many possible ways for you spend money on this free game as possible. Then they worry about how fun, or how playable the title is. That just doesn't fly. Some of these games might kill some time, but they'll never hold a candle to their P2P brothers.

On a side note, Guild Wars 2 doesn't look good. Okay, it looks decent, but it's F2P (pay to own) and it shows. I saw a trailer and it was clearly lower quality than other games releasing in it's time frame. And yet, for a F2P title, it looked decent. I feel like there shouldn't be that distinction. Give me something I can enjoy, without having to constantly remind myself it's 'free'.

Cuban-Americans stream to the island for holidays (AP)

MIAMI ? Deborah Labrada was giddy as she stood in line at Miami-Dade International Airport, waiting to fly to the town of Guantanamo, Cuba.

It is the place she visits roughly once a year to see her grandfather, aunts and uncles and cousins. She still considers it a second home, even though she has lived nearly all her 17 years in South Florida.

"The first thing I'm going to do when I get there is cry, and then give everyone hugs," she said Monday, as she leaned against her cart of bags secured in the festive, neon green airport plastic wrap. The duffel bags ? cheaper to ship through than heavier, traditional luggage ? bulged with food, over the counter medicine, toys and other necessities hard to obtain in Cuba's struggling economy.

Labrada was among thousands of Cuban-Americans flying to the island this week to celebrate the new year. These types of annual pilgrimages would have been sharply curtailed if two South Florida, GOP Cuban-American congressmen had succeeded in returning to the Bush-era limit of once every three years. The measure backed by U.S. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart and David Rivera was tucked into the congressional spending bill, but Republican leaders jettisoned it last week as part of a last minute compromise.

Labrada said Monday she didn't appreciate the effort to restore the old restriction.

"I think it was very disappointing, because the least we can do is help our own families," she said. "We should go and take advantage of the opportunity to bring them things and help any way we can."

President Barack Obama allowed unlimited family visits by Cuban-Americans shortly after taking office and removed the $1,200 annual cap on remittances. Exact numbers are difficult to come by, but the Cuban government said earlier this year it expected about 500,000 U.S. visitors annually, the vast majority of them Cuban-Americans. Cuban officials did not immediately respond to requests for corresponding statistics from past years, but they have previously said there were nearly 300,000 visits from Cubans living outside the island in 2009. It was not immediately clear whether that included repeat travelers.

Many Cuban-Americans, like Labrada have already been traveling to Cuba for years. They just had to go through special church trips or through a third country to get around the three year ban.

Of nearly a dozen families interviewed at the Miami Airport, all but two said they'd last visited the island in the last year or two.

"I don't think it should be any different for us than it is for anyone else going to visit family in any other country," Labrada said.

    Except it is different.

Most Cubans who come to the U.S. are able to immigrate here as a result of U.S. policy that views them as victims of political oppression. And as Diaz-Balart is quick to note, not everyone can travel. While average Cubans may be able to visit family off the island, their visa requests can easily be denied. The Cuban government has refused to allow blogger and internationally renowned activist Yoani Sanchez to travel to the U.S. and Europe to accept human rights awards.

But Professor Andy Gomez of the University of Miami's Institute for Cuba and Cuban-American Studies says the flood of travelers isn't likely to stop any time soon, and he says trying to stem the flow makes no sense.

"I was at the Miami airport last week, and there were flights on the hour," he said. "Stopping it? Impossible. It is the people-to-people contact we want and need, and it is already happening."

Most of the flights to Cuba still originate from South Florida, with nearly 300,000 people departing to the island just from Miami International Airport in 2010. Numbers for 2011 were not yet available. But they also now leave from places such as Tampa, Fla.; Oakland, Calif.; Los Angeles, New York City, Atlanta and Puerto Rico.

Flights to Cuba from the Tampa International Airport began in early September after a 50-year hiatus, and local officials are banking on it as a new source of revenue. Airport officials said about 45,000 passengers will travel the route in 2012.

Manny Martinez, a 21-year-old Tampa resident, was standing at the back of the long line four hours before Tuesday's flight. He said he's spending two weeks on the island and staying with family. Like Labrada, he said Cuba still feels like home, even though he's lived in the U.S. for 11 years.

When asked to name the first thing he would do once he arrived, he laughed.

"Party," he said. "Just go out with my old friends and have fun."

Not everyone goes just to see family.

Gomez said his maintenance man just returned from a trip to Cuba to visit his dentist because he has no health care insurance in the U.S. and can't afford the visit here. Meanwhile, media reports are on the rise in South Florida about Cuban-Americans involved in Medicare fraud fleeing to the island.

Back at the Miami airport, Isabel Baez, 39, teared up as she talked about visiting her family in Santiago de Cuba. Yet, she said she knows of people who also go as "mules," taking much needed provisions for others on the island who are not relatives, sometimes even for resale.

"But most of those people still go to see their family," she said. "They bring the packages as a way to get a free ticket."

Pew study: female vets more critical than men of Iraq, Afghanistan wars (The Christian Science Monitor)

Washington ? One of the most comprehensive studies of women?s changing role in the US military has found that they are a more racially diverse group than American men in uniform.

They are also less likely to be married and more critical of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The study was released this week by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center.

IN PICTURES: Military women of the world

Though officially banned from jobs that would put them directly in combat, female troops have seen their fair share of fighting. And they return back from war as deeply affected by it as their male comrades in arms.

The ranks of women overall in the military have increased dramatically since 1973, when the United States first established an all-volunteer force. During that time, the number of enlisted women has quadrupled from some 42,000 to 167,000.

What???s more, as the size of the US military began to shrink post-Vietnam, the share of women in the force increased from 2 percent to 14 percent.

Nearly one-third of active-duty women are black. That proportion is far higher than among males, where 16 percent of the troops are black, according to the Pew study. Moreover, only about half of active-duty women are white, compared with 71 percent of active-duty men.

Troops, whether male or female, seem to join the armed forces largely for the same reasons. More than 80 percent of both groups said they signed up to serve their country or to receive education benefits. Some 70 percent said they simply wanted to see the world.

However, the Pew study found one key difference among the groups, which points to the more precarious economic situation of women in America. Roughly 40 percent of female veterans say they joined the military ?because jobs were hard to find,? compared with only one-quarter of men. While 12 percent of military women are single mothers, just 4 percent of men are single fathers.

When it comes to marriage, active-duty women tend to be less likely to have spouses than their male counterparts (46 percent of women are married, versus 58 percent of men).

The choice of spouses differs between men and women. While almost half of those women who are married selected spouses who are also in the armed forces, only 7 percent of married men are paired with military women.

Once they leave the service, women veterans tend to be considerably more critical of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan than their male counterparts. When asked whether they thought the wars were ?worth fighting,? 63 percent of female veterans say Iraq was not, versus 47 percent of male veterans. Ditto the war in Afghanistan, at 54 percent versus 39 percent.

This is a gender gap, the Pew study notes, that is not particularly apparent among the general public.

Though they see less combat, women suffer from post-traumatic stress in numbers similar to their male colleagues, according to the Pew researchers. Some 45 percent of female veterans say they frequently feel irritable or angry, and 50 percent say they have experienced strains in their family relationships (versus 47 percent and 48 percent of men, respectively).

Yet when it comes to views of their own service, male and female troops tend to agree: They value the experience that accompanied their service. More than 90 percent of women say their military service was useful in helping them ?grow and mature as a person.? Three-quarters of both groups say they would advise a young person close to them to join the military.

Who would first lady be in next life? Bo the dog (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Michelle Obama would come back as Bo. Not just any dog, but Bo the dog.

In a television interview, the first lady was asked what person or thing she would want to come back as when she dies. She named her family's Portuguese water dog.

"He's got a great life," she told ABC News' Barbara Walters.

President Barack Obama took a pass on the question, one in a series the first couple faced for an upcoming holiday TV special.

Asked when he tells lies, the president said only in personal interactions with family members, such as when commenting on how someone looks in a particular dress.

As for his biggest pet peeve about his wife, the president said he had none. She said of him: "My list is too long."

Tensions rise as Iraq seeks Sunni VP arrest (Reuters)

BAGHDAD (Reuters) ? Iraqi authorities issued an arrest warrant for Sunni Muslim Vice-President Tareq al-Hashemi on Monday for suspected ties to assassinations and bombings, a decision likely to fuel sectarian tensions after the U.S. troop withdrawal.

The move risks unraveling Iraq's fragile power-sharing deal among Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish blocs who have struggled to overcome tensions just a few years after sectarian slaughter drove the country to the edge of a civil war.

Interior Ministry spokesman, Major General Adel Daham, told a news conference confessions by suspects identified as Hashemi's bodyguards linked the vice president to killings and attacks on Iraqi government and security officials.

"An arrest warrant was issued for Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi according to Article 4 of the terrorism law and is signed by five judges... this warrant should be executed," Daham said, waving a copy of the document in front of reporters.

The political struggle between Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki and his Sunni rivals in the country's delicate power-sharing deal has intensified during the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops nearly nine years after the invasion.

The ministry showed taped confessions, aired on state-run Iraqiya television and other local media, of men it claimed were members of Hashemi's security detail. The men said they had been paid by his office to carry out killings.

The three men shown on television detailed the assassinations they were told to carry out by Hashemi's aides including planting roadside bombs and driveby shootings of security and government officials.

One man said he was handed $3,000 as a reward by Hashemi himself.

But the identity of the men could not be independently confirmed.

Hashemi, who could not be contacted for a response, was in Kurdistan, a semi-autonomous enclave in the north, Kurdish political sources said. Kurdistan has its own government and security forces, making Hashemi's immediate arrest unlikely.

In a statement earlier on Monday, Hashemi accused Maliki's government of "deliberate harassment" after his plane was delayed for three hours at Baghdad airport. He had been heading for the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya to meet the Iraqi president.

Security forces arrested three Hashemi bodyguards on their way back from the airport, the statement said, adding military forces surrounding Hashemi's house for weeks had been beefed up.

"The vice-president has been very patient and is waiting for a reasonable explanation from the government parties concerned," the statement said.

    DEEPENING CRISIS

Fearing a deepening crisis that could push Iraq back into sectarian turmoil, senior Iraqi politicians were holding talks with Maliki and other leaders to contain the dispute.

The U.S. ambassador in Iraq was in contact with senior Iraqi leaders, the U.S. embassy in Baghdad said, without providing details on which figures or the matters under discussion.

Violence has ebbed sharply since the peak of attacks in 2006-07 when suicide bombings and hit-squads claimed thousands of victims in tit-for-tat killing between Sunni and Shi'ite communities.

But sectarian tensions are close to the surface and still color many aspects of Iraqi political life.

The completion of the U.S. withdrawal on Sunday left many Iraqis fearful that a shaky peace deal between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis might collapse and reignite sectarian violence.

Maliki over the weekend asked parliament for a vote of no-confidence against another leading Sunni politician, Saleh al-Mutlaq, who is deputy prime minister, on the grounds that he lacked faith in the political process.

Hashemi and Mutlaq are both leaders of the Iraqiya bloc, a secular group backed by minority Sunnis, which joined Maliki's unity government only reluctantly and recently boycotted parliament sessions after complaining of being marginalized

Many Sunnis, who were in power under Saddam, feel shunted aside by the rise of Shi'ites after the invasion. Already some Sunni-dominated regions in Iraq are seeking more autonomy from the central government, chaffing against what they see as an increasingly authoritarian tack taken by Maliki.

Arab League considers turning to UN over Syria (AP)

BEIRUT ? The Arab League has given Syria until Wednesday to allow observers into the country or else it will likely turn to the U.N. Security Council for action to try to end the deadly violence against regime opponents, Qatar's prime minister said Saturday.

Sheik Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabr Al Thani said in Qatar that Arab foreign ministers will hold a "decisive and important" meeting in Cairo on Wednesday to decide on next steps. He said there is near unanimity on taking the Arab League's plan to the Security Council in hopes the world body can bring more pressure to bear on Damascus to accept it. Syria has demanded changes to the proposal, which calls for an end to the government's crackdown.

"We hope that the brothers in Syria sign before that date," Hamad said, referring to Wednesday's meeting.

The violence continued Saturday. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said security forces shot dead at least 20 people, most of them in the central province of Homs, a restive province that has seen intense protests and clashes since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March.

Another activist group, the Local Coordination Committees, said 34 people were killed, including eight army defectors. It did not say where the defectors were killed but there have been reports of clashes in the northwestern province of Idlib.

The United Nations has been waiting for word from the Arab League before moving ahead with a resolution on Syria. A clear nod from Syria's Arab neighbors could ease Russian and Chinese opposition to sanctions. Both nations have veto power at the Security Council.

The Arab plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, hold talks with the opposition and allow in Arab observers to ensure compliance with the deal. It does not call for foreign military intervention, as happened in Libya.

"We will not put forward a new initiative. We will put forward to the Security Council the Arab initiative and Arab resolutions," Hamad said. "We are not speaking about military intervention."

The 22-member League has also suspended Syria's membership and imposed sanctions, but it has been divided over whether to seek the help of the wider international community beyond the Arab world. Hamad's remarks after an Arab ministerial committee meeting in Qatar indicated that the camp objecting to outside intervention may be getting smaller.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said the only remaining point of disagreement with Syria is over some wording in the plan calling for the protection of "Syrian civilians." Syria wants that changed to "Syrian citizens" since many of those killed in the turmoil have been regime soldiers who died in clashes with army defectors.

The Arab League objects to the change, arguing that soldiers and policemen can protect themselves since they are armed, Elaraby said.

"What is needed is the protection of civilians, not armed people. Let me be clear, this is the only point of disagreement," Elaraby said.

Syria has seen a sharp escalation in armed clashes recently, raising concerns the country of 22 million is headed toward civil war. The U.N. raised its death toll for the Syrian uprising substantially this week, saying more 5,000 people have been killed since the revolt began nine months ago.

Russia, which had opposed Security Council action on Syria, surprised council members on Thursday by introducing a draft resolution that "demands that all parties in Syria immediately stop any violence irrespective of where it comes from." The draft, however, does not mention sanctions, something that Western nations have been pushing.

The Arab League wants to see "that Arab resolutions are adopted rather than those of other nations," Hamad said in an apparent reference to the Russian draft.

The United States said it would only support the Russian draft if it were changed to make a clear distinction between the actions of peaceful protesters and those of the government.

An Iraqi delegation, meanwhile, met with Assad in Syria on Saturday to discuss ways of ending the crisis.

A member of the Iraqi delegation, Izzat Shahbandar, said the Syrian president informed them he is ready to open dialogue with the opposition, meet demands of opposition groups, abolish parts of the constitution and accept the results of future elections.

Shahbandar did not say what parts of the constitution Assad was ready to do away with, but some regime opponents have objected to section eight, which says the ruling Baath Party is the "leader of the nation and society."

Other opposition groups, however, say they will accept nothing less than regime change.

The Iraqi delegation will travel to Cairo, where the Arab League is headquartered, to raise Assad's comments with Arab League officials, Shahbandar said.

Many Iraqis fear that if civil war breaks out in Syria it could spread to Iraq, its eastern neighbor. Iraq was one of the few countries that abstained from voting in favor of Arab sanctions against Syria.

Will 'Sister Wives' stars beat Utah's bigamy law?

The Kody Brown Bunch is hoping to rewrite the rule books in Utah.

The polygamous clan made famous on the TLC hit reality series "Sister Wives" has asked a federal judge in Utah to continue to let them challenge the state's bigamy laws.

    Here's what went down today.

MORE: Sister Wives' Polygamy Clan: We Live in Fear Because of Utah's Bigamy Law

Lawyers for Brown and his four wives ? Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn ? offered oral arguments this morning for an hour-and-a-half before U.S. District Judge Clark Waddoups, who, according to his clerk, took the case "under advisement" and plans to rule on the matter at an unspecified future date.

"The court gave us a fair hearing and we will await his decision," Brown's attorney and George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley tells E! News. "We are committed to pursuing these claims on behalf of the Brown family wherever they take us in the legal system."

The family filed a lawsuit in Salt Lake City District Court back in July claiming Utah's bigamy law is unconstitutional because it criminalizes their private sexual relationships and prohibits them from living together. They've told the court they fear being punished by the statute, which they say has caused them irreprable harm and forced them to temporarily move to Nevada.

"The Brown's remain subject to potential persecution due to their status as a plural family," reads the complaint. "The family used their savings and moved their 17 children to Nevada in January after the state of Utah opened up a bigamy investigation on them."

(Kody is legally married only to Meri and the other three "sister wives" are so-called "commitments.")

The ever-expanding family belongs to the Apostolic United Brethren Church, which is centered in Salt Lake City, but per court docs, "due to the low of AUB members in Nevada, the Brown's cannot fully perform their religious practices outside of Utah and must return to Utah to engage in certain religious practices."

Part of the suit's aim is to make it safe for the Brown's and their 21-strong brood to move back to Utah.

"This family is asking no more than any family deserves: to be heard in the courts," says Turley. "This challenge was brought to benefit not just polygamists but all citizens who wish to live their lives according to their own values ? even if those values run counter to those of the majority in the state."

The Utah Attorney General's Office has asked Waddoups to toss the suit on the grounds that because it's unlikely prosecutors will go after the clan and the family failed to show how they've been injured by the state.

AG Mark Shurtleff has previously said his staff does not have the resources to prosecute polygamists unless they discovered more serious offenses, such as incest , statutory rape or abuse.

None of the Browns attended today's proceeding, prefering to let their attorneys do the talking on behalf of their privacy rights.

"While the state has asked for the courthouse doors to be shut to this family," says Turley, "we believe they have a right to be heard on the unconstitutionality of this law."

Russian aid convoy stuck on Serbia-Kosovo border (AP)

JARINJE, Kosovo ? A stranded Russian aid convoy for Kosovo Serbs is at the center of an escalating dispute Wednesday between Moscow and international peacekeepers, with a top Western official casting doubt on the humanitarian goal of the aid mission.

The convoy of more than 20 Russian trucks was stopped Tuesday at a Kosovo border with Serbia guarded by U.S. soldiers, increasing tensions in the volatile region. It remained stranded Wednesday.

Moscow has become the champion of Serb defiance against Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia. Local Serbs are frustrated by Belgrade's refusal to use force to save them from ethnic Albanian rule, and have turned to the Kremlin for help.

The minority Serbs, who reject Kosovo's statehood, have been blocking roads in the Serb-run north of the country to prevent Pristina authorities from taking control. The peacekeepers say the convoy's cargo consisting of canned food, blankets, tents and power generators appears like it is intended for those manning the roadblocks, and not for the general Kosovo Serb population.

"I don't know if the Russian aid is a propaganda trick or something else," the top Western official overseeing Kosovo's independence, Pieter Feith, told Serbian reporters. "Although not surprising, the (Russian aid) initiative is not practical."

"Poverty and misery exist in Kosovo, but the U.N. and the EU have not proclaimed the north of Kosovo as a zone of a humanitarian catastrophe," Feith said.

Russian officials escorting the convoy accused Kosovo's peacekeepers of blocking passage. EU officials in Kosovo said the Russians can pass if they allow an international police escort.

Russia's ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandr Konuzin, who is leading the convoy, refused an EU escort and accused the peacekeepers of "political blackmail."

Serbia's state Tanjug news agency said Konuzin asked for help from top Moscow officials.

Russia's envoy to NATO, Dmitry Rogozin, called the stoppage of the convoy "a humanitarian crime." He told Russian news channel Vesti-24 that such actions by Western countries "lead the Serbian minority in Kosovo to extinction."

The spokesman for the EU rule of law mission in Kosovo, Nicholas Hawton, said "there are two options for the convoy.

"Either they have a EULEX police escort to the destination following customs control, or proceed to Merdare," he said referring to Kosovo's eastern border crossing with Serbia that is manned by ethnic Albanian customs officials.

"It is a normal EU standard for a convoy of this size to have a police escort," Hawton said.

Konuzin has refused the alternative border crossing, saying the controls there are done by Pristina authorities, which are not recognized by Russia and Serbia.

Russia is considered a traditional Serb ally because of common Slavic roots and the Christian Orthodox religion.

T.I. Says His Legal Troubles Kept Him From Signing Meek Mill ...

T.I. believes his back-to-back prison bids kept him from moving on signing Meek Mill to Grand Hustle?

T.I. is blaming his legal woes for not being able to sign Meek Mill to his Grand Hustle imprint before the up-and-coming rapper signed to Maybach Music Group.

?After my two [jail] hiatuses I was put in a position where I couldn?t really make moves on Meek as quick as he may have wanted to,? Tip told Billboard.com?s The Juice.

Instead, of course, Meek signed with Rick Ross? MMG, become an XXL Freshman and has had a huge year, scoring hits like ?I?ma Boss,? ?Tupac Back? and ?House Party? all before his solo effort with MMG.

?I never been one want to hold anyone back or to slow down the success of anybody,? T.I. continued. ?I?m the first to try to enhance what you have and if I can?t make it better then I shouldn?t be a part of it.?

Before signing to Ross? label, Meek got his feet wet while hanging out T.I., even making a cameo in the King of The South?s ?What Up, What?s Haapnin?? video. ?Jakinder Singh
